The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice is seeking a Data & Program Manager for our citywide Immigration Law Unit (ILU). In conjunction with ILU managers and other Civil Practice staff, the Immigration Data & Program Manager will be responsible for managing intakes and referrals across ILU, coordinating data collection and grant reporting, supervising paralegal 1s in an administrative capacity and the ILU coordinator, and supporting on-boarding of all new staff and non-attorney volunteers around program management.

The Immigration Law Unit of The Legal Aid Society (LAS) is a recognized leader in the delivery of legal services to immigrants in all five boroughs of New York City and surrounding counties within the New York District of the USCIS. The Unit provides low-income New Yorkers with free comprehensive immigration services ranging from deportation defense to adjustment of status to legal permanent residence and citizenship applications. The Unit specializes in the intersection between immigration and criminal law and works collaboratively with all practice areas to serve LAS's diverse immigrant clients through a comprehensive service model. Unit staff represent immigrants before USCIS, immigration judges in removal proceedings, and the Board of Immigration Appeals, as well as in federal court on habeas corpus petitions, petitions for review, administrative and judicial appeals, and other matters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Program and Data Management
  • Manage Immigration Coordinator and Paralegals on day-to-day responsibilities
  • With Immigration Management team, establish case management monitoring and tracking systems
  • Refine data collection practices citywide with Immigration and Office Management teams
  • Manage and coordinate intake procedures and policies
  • Manage and coordinate internal/external referrals
  • Compile and maintain records of project decisions and meeting notes
  • Work with ILU and other Civil Practice administrative staff to ensure that ILU case matters are timely updated with data required for grants management
  • Work with Grants & Contracts on programmatic audits
  • In partnership with the Grants and Contracts management team, ensure clear communication and compliance with contractual requirements
  • Provide case management system training to Immigration Coordinator and administrative support paralegals
  • Foster and encourage teamwork and communication
  • Represent the Civil Practice and LAS in the community


Team Management
  • Schedule employee hours, assign work, approve time off and remote work schedule requests following the guidance of LAS policy and procedures
  • Attend management meetings, participate in management trainings, and utilize current employment policies, practices and guidance as provided by management and Human Resources
  • Conduct management and supervision practices that affirmatively support equity and inclusion in the workplace
  • Supervise direct reports in setting performance standards, provide routine feedback as well as coaching/counseling, and issue disciplinary action as needed
  • Identify and provide training and development opportunities and ensure mandatory trainings are completed


Professional Development and other duties as assigned
  • Participate in continuous professional development
  • Continuously learn about forms of bias in the workplace and demonstrate affirmative behaviors that support an inclusive work environment
  • Other duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS

Required qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of work experience or an equivalent of 7+ years of post-secondary education and work experience


Preferred qualifications:
  • Prior management or team leadership experience strong preferred
  • Experience in advocating for non-citizens
  • Experience in public interest law and civil legal services
  • Proficiency in Spanish is desirable, but not required

  • Excellent oral and written advocacy skills
  • Ability to work in a team setting including strong communication and follow-up skills
  • Demonstrated ability to gather data, compile information, keep accurate records, and conceptualize statistical reports
  • Strong computer skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel, and the ability to work with databases strongly preferred
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to manage relationships and effectively communicate with ILU management team and other Civil Practice administrative staff
  • Highly self-motivated and able to work independently

  • Ability to schedule, assign, and manage work and resolve problems as needed
  • Ability to manage the work including: assessment of work process and outcomes, gathering relevant information about the work, recommending alternatives, or elevate issues as needed

  • Ability to provide meaningful performance feedback for professional development including having difficult conversations and resolving sensitive employee issues

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The salary range represents a good faith estimate of the range we expect to pay for this role. The actual salary offered may vary depending on many factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, as well as collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.

Salary Range: $87,300 - $93,300
