Primary Purpose of Department
The UNC Charlotte Environmental Health and Safety office implements policies, procedures and programs designed to protect people, property, and the environment. The Environmental Health and Safety office promotes a culture of safety by advancing adherence to environmental protection and occupational health and safety compliance regulations.
Primary Purpose of Position
Use knowledge of EHS practices to manage the Environmental and Contractor Safety Team in overseeing a variety of environmental programs and the activities of Contractors operating at the University. Environmental programs will include, but are not limited to Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure Plan, Reclaimed Water, Storm Water and Refrigerant Management. The Contractor Safety program will include planning and design, contractor operations, and regulated material management. In addition, this position will direct the Cranes and Hoists Safety Program, Hazardous Building Materials and Fall Protection Program.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree and two years of related experience; or Master's degree in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or related discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Some positions may require additional training or licensure.

Summary of Position Responsibilities
- Plan, develop and implement assigned environmental programs and the Contractor Safety Program. Develop policies and procedures pertaining to these programs.
- Articulate operational goals and provide leadership in the planning, organizing and managing of work operations. Assign individual projects to staff members based on their individual areas of expertise. Evaluate staff capabilities and make assignments accordingly for new service requests.
- Responsible for applying extensive environmental and safety knowledge to address moderately complex programs and provide technical support to assigned departments to ensure EHS program enrollment, implementation of hazard control techniques, development of safety management plans, loss prevention techniques, and regulatory compliance.
- Lead all environmental and contractor safety management changes. Establish an operational calendar that outlines planned activities and necessary changes to increase program efficiency.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the campus community, regulatory agencies and professional associations. Develop and disseminate trend analysis reports.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- A Master's degree in business administration, public administration, management, physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology, or related discipline.
- Supervisor experience of at least one (1) year preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of OSHA Construction Standard.
- Knowledge of EPA and NC DEQ regulations covering SPCC, Used Oil, Refrigerant Management, Storm water and Reclaimed Water.
- Experience with establishing a health and safety management system in a higher education or public setting.
- Excellent communication and training skills
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines and multiple requests.
Necessary Certifications/Licenses
- Valid Driver's License Needed.
Preferred Certifications/Licenses
- Accreditation as a Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).
