Job Title: Cytologist

Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience required; 2-3 years preferred in high complexity testing in an acute care hospital setting
License: Cytotechnologist (ASCP) or eligible
Certifications: Must obtain annual membership with certification agency
Must-Have: Proficiency in non-GYN along with normal GYN screening; Bachelor's degree in science or equivalent

Job Description:

- Follow established standard practices to prepare and stain microscopic slides from specimens of blood, tissue scrapings, and body fluids.
- Examine cells to detect evidence of cancer, abnormalities, and other pathological conditions.
- Categorize slides, record classification, compile patient listings for follow-up analysis, and report unusual cell structures or abnormalities to the Pathologist.
- Address all daily operations of the cytology laboratory.
- Meet expectations of applicable competencies as a Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
- Enter patient information, orders, and technical information into the laboratory information system (LIS).
- Devise and direct performance of routine and special stains within acceptable TAT guidelines to provide appropriate slides for microscopic evaluation.
- Operate staining and other relevant laboratory equipment to ensure the production of quality slides.
- Perform manual stains as needed.
- Assist Pathologists with fine needle aspirations.
- Use microscopic techniques and stained slides to identify and mark unusual findings in specimens based on accepted morphologic criteria.
- Evaluate cell samples for normal/abnormal cellular patterns and assess malignant, pre-malignant, inflammatory, and benign changes.
- Refer pertinent cellular changes for supervisor and/or pathologist review.
- Perform quality control and improvement analyses and record results according to policy and procedure guidelines.
- Conduct established daily and periodic preventive maintenance and troubleshoot minor problems; manage supplies and review policies and procedures.
- Attend, read, or listen to educational materials for professional development.
- Train new staff in laboratory practices.
- Complete tasks or special projects within assigned time frames as requested.
- Follow established protocols for safety, infection control, security, compliance, and the use of hazardous materials.
