Reporting to the Director, Information Management, the Staff Data Engineer will play a pivotal role in expanding the Choice's use of data as a strategic enabler of organizational goals and objectives while ensuring high levels of data quality. The Staff Data Engineer is responsible for the design, development and implementation of database structure, system level data architecture, governance and processes, and tools across multiple data types. This individual will act as the primary advocate of data modeling methodologies and enterprise-level best practices.

The Staff Data Engineer is responsible for the design, development and implementation of database structure, system level data architecture, governance and processes, and tools across multiple data types. This individual will act as the primary advocate of data modeling methodologies and enterprise-level best practices.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive data architecture that includes conceptual, logical, and physical data models for various data domains, ensuring alignment with business requirements and data governance principles.
- Oversee the design and implementation of data integration pipelines to ingest, transform, and load data from various sources into the data lake/warehouse, and ensure pipelines are optimized for performance, scalability, and reliability.
- Collaborate with the Staff Architect, Information Management to assess, identify and prioritize areas of data quality improvement and opportunities for data quality monitoring to improve data accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
- Support the development and maintenance of data dictionaries, glossaries, and other data documentation to promote data understanding and accessibility.
- Collaborate with external data engineers to implement and maintain data governance tools and processes within the data architecture.
- Work closely with business stakeholders to understand their data needs for reports, forms, queries and data extraction, and translate them into technical requirements.
- Collaborate with technical teams (e.g., developers, DBAs) to ensure seamless integration of data solutions with existing systems.
- Ensure the stability and reliability of data access and data quality across the organization via ongoing database monitoring, support and maintenance.
- Develop and deploy end-user practices and tools for data extraction, queries, and data manipulation in accordance with business processes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, data engineering, information technology, or a related field together with 8 years related work experience.
- Proven technical experience in building, installing, configuring, supporting, assessing and enhancing data lakes and systems.
- Hands on experience with data architecting, large-scale data modeling, and business requirements gathering/analysis.
- Experience working with cloud-based data warehousing platforms such as Synapse, Snowflake, Databricks or similar.
- Proficiency in SQL and other query languages; familiarity with Python or R is a plus.
- Ability to act as a primary resource on major technical data modeling projects.
- Strong understanding of data engineering theories, principles, and best practices, and strategies for improving data quality.
- Experience in creating comprehensive technical documentation and documenting processes, including proficiency with data processing flowcharting techniques.
- Hands-on experience with data migration, integration, and optimization projects.
- Proficiency in performing meticulous peer code reviews to ensure high-quality code and adherence to best practices.
- Exceptional ability to ensure that technical solutions meet scalability, performance, and security requirements.
- Familiarity with project management concepts.
- Strong collaboration skills, especially with third-party resources for technical architecture design and development.
- Strong analytical, conceptual and troubleshooting skills to efficiently resolve technical issues.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts in user-friendly language.
- Willingness to support team members, fostering internal expertise and reducing reliance on external resources.
- Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences, explaining complex data concepts in clear and concise business terms.
