The Knowledge Enterprise (KE) Research Project Management Office (PMO) at ASU seeks an energetic and creative individual to join us as a Program Manager, Research to help our faculty uncover the lessons of the past, navigate the perils of the present, and reinvent the promise of the future. ASU is evolving into a New American University that achieves excellence, access, and impact. To that end, KE, the home base for research at ASU, is charged with managing and growing a research portfolio that now exceeds $900M annually. This research encompasses fundamental and use-directed topics.
KE's Project and Program Managers work closely and collaboratively with faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to plan, direct, organize, and execute fast-paced and highly complex research projects and the programs that they serve, across a range of scales. In the university environment this requires: developing a working knowledge of cutting edge concepts and technologies; working with teams to develop proposals and other strategies to fund projects and programs (e.g., defining scope, outlining deliverables and milestones, developing costing models, and writing/editing support);understanding the importance of graduate and other training in the research enterprise; learning to navigate and anticipate the dynamic and ambitious ASU environment; and helping to manage resources efficiently and creatively by monitoring task and milestone delivery, tracking adherence to budgets, managing staffing requirements, and fulfilling reporting expectations.
It is anticipated that this position will be located primarily at ASU's MacroTechnology Works (MTW) site, an ASU facility less than 10 miles from Tempe campus, where semiconductor and microelectronics industry members get a combination of access to advanced equipment and research capabilities that are unique to ASU. The position is envisioned to support project work in microelectronics and semiconductors.

Essential Duties:
  • Plans, develops, implements, and manages a project team from concept through complete task definitions, work requirement identification, and assignments.
  • Works closely and collaboratively with key stakeholders to define project scope, strategy, budget, and outcomes; identifies critical resource expertise requirements and targets appropriate internal and/or external sources to ensure optimal outcome(s).
  • Establishes and continually monitors/manages project expectations with team; assigns tasks and identifies issues for resolution to ensure optimal team effectiveness.
  • Prepares and maintains all project status reports and schedules; tracks milestones/deliverables, critical paths, and dependencies; re-sets expectations as needed in consideration of project progress/outcomes.
  • Develops, prepares, maintains, and forecasts multiple complex project level budgets.
  • Manages project risks through collaboration with the project team and application of established risk management practices including the use of a risk register and qualitative/quantitative risk analysis.
  • Works collaboratively with Principal Investigator(s) to engage leadership, associated scientists and other research related staff to define and identify all required project infrastructure including, but not limited to: space, build/reconfiguration of laboratory facilities, equipment, technology and instrumentation to ensure timely availability for successful launch and ongoing project operations.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience using project management principles, practices, and techniques needed for managing multiple large, complex projects throughout the project lifecycle. Examples include earned value management, qualitative and quantitative risk management, and change management.
  • Evidence of Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Experience in writing and developing proposals for funding from federal and/or philanthropic sources.
  • Technical or project management experience in semiconductor and microelectronics. Note that this skillset is desired but not required.

    • Remote work is an arrangement where the employee spends less than 60% of their regular workweek at a regularly assigned ASU work location. Executive vice president-level approval is required.


    Standard Working Environment:
  • Climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of being in a stationary position.
  • Constantly detects and operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine and computer printer.
  • Ability to clearly communicate and exchange accurate information to perform essential duties.
  • Expected to be responsive to customers, engaged in work production, resourceful, flexible, and respectful of others.


Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and seven (7) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
