Position Summary

In collaboration with the medical and leadership team, the Patient Safety Nurse promotes a culture of patient safety and adherence to national clinical standards. The Patient Safety Nurse serves as a visible and recognized advocate within the interdisciplinary team of providers, clinical pharmacists, care management, advanced practice providers and clinical nurse specialists; all while working together to plan and implement the most safe, effective and evidenced based patient care.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:
  • Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
  • Responsible for designing, implementing and evaluating client care by coordinating, delegating and supervising the care provided by a healthcare team at the clinical level.
  • Serves as a patient safety advocate and clinical role model in their specific specialty.
  • Presents patient and staff concerns to appropriate clinical forums.
  • Participates in and contributes to clinical review activities.
  • Assists and supports the healthcare team with disclosure when adverse event or untoward outcome occurs and coordinates debriefing sessions.
  • Identify and monitor specific metrics leading to improving patient care.
  • Provides data as requested by internal and external bodies.
  • Performs collaborative reviews of adverse occurrences and near misses. Incorporates such into educational efforts.
  • Maintains a database of records reviewed, issues identified and plans of correction.
  • Assesses the documentation of charts reviewed and provides timely feedback to clinicians.
  • Flexible in work hours to provide a consistent communication and evaluation throughout all shifts to support a 24/7 care .
  • Fosters and promotes participation by all members of the team (Physicians, Nurses, Support staff) in education programs and drills.
  • Facilitates clinical drills for high risk situations.
  • Participates in ongoing education of nurses in their clinical specialty department.
  • Collaborates and meets with the Magnet Program director on a regular basis.
  • Serves as a Magnet writer.
  • Provides direct patient care at the direction of the Director of Nursing except for the Cardiac Cath Lab service line.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
  • Education & Experience Requirements

    NYS licensed RN

    Master's degree, preferred, BSN required

    National Certification in Specialty area upon application or within one year of hire At least 5 years nursing experience in area

    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Experience with adult learning

    Working knowledge of Microsoft Office

    Previous research, patient safety, simulation or team training experience highly preferred

    • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital's SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital's Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
    • Position requires ability to move about freely at least 85 per cent of the time.
    • Must be able to remain stationary for extended/prolonged periods.
    • Frequently moves/transports objects up to fifty (50) pounds and must be able to move patients of all weights with a minimum of one (1) assist or assistive device/equipment
    • Must be able to work in environment with continuous interruptions
    • Must be able to assess and respond to rapidly changing situational needs of patients, department and hospital.
    • Must be able to adapt in a high stress and fast-paced environment with multiple interruptions.
    • Must be able to detect sounds and respond to emergency sounds/signals at all times.
    • Must be able to constantly operate computer, equipment and other devices.
    • Position requires ability to concentrate on fine detail with interruptions and attend to tasks for more than sixty (60) minutes at a time.
    • Must be able to manage competing priorities.

    Salary Range: $117,419 - $154,233 (Based on full time employment)
