Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under general administration of Nursing, the Nurse Practitioner collaborates and is accountable to the Chief Medical Officer for health care assessment. Performs physical and psychosocial assessments of individuals, routine histories and exams, diagnosis of illness and executes corrective therapeutic interventions in collaboration with a Physician and in accordance with written Nurse Practitioner protocols approved by the institution's Medical Board.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Identifies and discriminates between physical and psychological signs and symptoms relating to the health status of individuals through health and development history taking and physical diagnosis consistent with established nursing practice.
2. Consistent with established nursing practice, differentiates between normal and abnormal findings in the screening process to detect changes in the health status that require the physician's intervention.
3. Evaluates and interprets patient data in order to plan and implement appropriate nursing intervention.
4. Consults with the physician for evaluation of findings of the health screening in order to make prospective decisions about treatment.
5. Ensuring medical records reflect symptoms, treatments, and administration of prescribed and over the counter medicine.
6. Educating patients about medical conditions and treatment plans.
7. Manages the care of selected patients within protocols mutually agreed upon by nursing medical personnel
8. Records and maintains a system of patient progress notes to plan program management and therapy appropriate to patients' needs.
9. Collaborates with other members of the interdisciplinary team in order to determine, evaluate and attain health goals. Determines possible alterative settings for providing health care (e.g. home or institution) and initiates referrals.
10. Conducts and participates in community clinics for case finding.
11. Provides to patients and information relating to the implication of health status, treatment and progress. Counsels and guides patients in order to develop favorable attitudes toward health care and maintenance and to encourage practices that promote health and well-being and reduce anxiety, stress and disability.
12. Provides teaching, guidance and direction to nursing personnel in rendering health care and assists in directing and coordinating nursing activities.

Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse issued by the New York State Department of Education (NYSED); and
2. Current certificate as a Nurse Practitioner issued by the NYSED; and
3. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).

Department Preferences

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB:
1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State; and
2. Master of Science degree in Nursing, with an approved program in Primary Health Care;
3. Satisfactory completion of an approved postgraduate course consisting of classroom and clinical experience in Primary Health Care, and two (2) years of satisfactory clinical nursing experience.

In addition to base compensation, you may also receive the following based on the Collectively-Bargained Agreement:

An annual education differential if you currently possess an appropriate degree in nursing or an allied health discipline from an accredited college or university, as listed below:
  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Bachelors in allied health discipline = $900
  • Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Masters in allied health discipline = $1,200
  • Doctorate in Education, Nursing Practice or PhD in Nursing (DNP) = $2,500

An annual certification differential of $1,878 if you currently hold an appropriate certification that is nationally recognized in the discipline or area of specialization for which you are employed.

An annual nursing experience differential ranging from $1,097 up to $9,100 for up to 10 years of experience if you have outside nursing experience as a Nurse Practitioner.
