POSITION SUMMARY:

A Surgical Technologist First Assist has the technical skills to assist the surgeon with specific intraoperative procedures. Working under the direction of a physician, the STFA may provide direct care to patients preoperatively, intraoperatively and postoperatively. As a scrubbed member of the operating room team, plans for the STFA anticipating the surgeon's needs throughout the procedures. Participates in continuous quality improvement activities and educational experiences in support of departmental and divisional nursing philosophy and objectives, as well as, Health System initiatives.

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

Minimum:
  • High School Diploma
  • Completion of a surgical technologist program or completion of military education which includes aseptic technique and operative procedures.
  • Successful completion of a program in Surgical First Assisting.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

Minimum:
  • Surgical Technologist Certification (CST).
  • Certified First Assist (e.g., CST-FA) within 1 year of hire into position.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
Demonstrated knowledge of aseptic technique.
Familiarity with medical terminology. Good organizational skills.
Ability to communicate in English both verbally and in writing.
Successful completion of annual clinical, age and job specific competencies and skill verification tools.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Plans for, obtains and opens necessary equipment and supplies for assigned procedures, consulting surgeon's preference card and other available resources.
Assists the surgeon with specific intraoperative procedures: provides exposure and hemostasis, uses electrosurgery, manipulates tissue, sutures, closes wound layers, selects and applies sterile dressings.
Performs surgical scrub process, gowns and gloves and prepares the sterile field for procedure according to hospital policy. Maintains and monitors aseptic technique, reporting all observed breaks. When not scrubbed, functions as an assisting member of the operating team.
Works under the direction of the attending surgeon and other physicians as assigned.
Handles instruments and supplies safely. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and patient.
Assists in the education process of new employees, students and co-workers.
Performs all aspects of care in an environment that optimizes patient and environmental safety and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and compliance efforts (e.g., the WHO Surgical Safely Checklist).
