Job Description
Job Title: Speech Language Pathologist
Job Specialty: Language Pathology
Job Duration: 13 Weeks
Shift: Daytime 8-hour shifts; could be 7:30-4 or any time after 7:30. Option to discuss 4x 10-hour shifts.
Guaranteed Hours: 40.00 per week
Experience: Minimum of two years providing direct patient care in an inpatient or outpatient setting preferred.
License: Current Speech Language Pathologist Certification with state of employment.
Certifications:
- Master's degree in speech language therapy with a Certificate of Clinical Competence.
- Current Certificate of Clinical Competency from the American Speech Language Hearing Association.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association.
Must-Have: Prior use of electronic medical records (EMR) preferred.
Job Description:
- Evaluate patients referred to speech therapy by completing initial profiles within time standards per department protocol.
- Apply appropriate diagnostic and prognostic tests, including dysphagia, aphasia, language, voice, speech, and cognitive deficits.
- Conduct standardized testing using special tests to determine disability levels and track patient care outcomes.
- Perform a variety of therapeutic interventions, including swallowing, voice, speech language, and cognitive skills.
- Establish treatment plans with measurable and attainable goals in collaboration with the patient, family, and healthcare team, including discharge planning.
- Select and implement therapy activities per protocol with appropriate instructions.
- Revise therapy materials, equipment, and activities to meet patient, family, and therapy goals.
- Recognize individual limitations and capabilities and utilize available resources.
- Evaluate patients' learning styles and teach necessary skills and techniques for therapy participation.
- Consult with team members to select appropriate activities or programs based on patient needs and capabilities.
- Coordinate work by training, allocating, and monitoring other personnel.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, staff, physicians, and others, respecting confidentiality.
- Demonstrate flexibility by adapting to other areas and schedules, including weekends, holidays, and after-hours shifts.
- Support overall work volume through cross-training and completing additional functions as needed.
- Document patient care activities, evaluations, progress notes, and treatment records per standards of practice.
- Facilitate preparation of patient schedules, billing charges, and other reports through timely documentation completion.
- Use descriptive, behavioral terms with correct grammar, approved abbreviations, and medical terminology in documentation.
- Document ongoing status, interventions, patient response, and outcomes for accurate billing charges.
- Participate in personal, professional, and program development through department meetings and in-services.
- Assist in training speech pathology staff, students, and other hospital personnel.
- Act as a resource for new staff members and co-workers by sharing information and education.
- Adhere to professional code of ethics and all regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrate effective time management and prioritize workload to meet productivity requirements.
- Adapt to changing technologies, policies, regulations, and staffing through priority setting and flexibility.
