Job Description

Position Overview:

An integral member of behavior health team at Coler this fulltime psychologist provides direct behavior health services including comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, behavior risk evaluations, as well as provide a leadership role at the facility in quality and performance improvement activities in behavior health under the general direction by the Chief of Psychiatry, with latitude for independent judgment and decision making.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluation including a diagnostic assessment, psychological evaluations as needed and develop resident specific behavior care plan addressing safety and psychological needs by conducting a mental status evaluation and obtaining behavior health history from sources such as acute care facilities, family members or the primary care team members.
  • Conduct specific psychological and cognitive evaluations as appropriate in collaboration with attending psychiatrists.
  • Provide behavioral risk assessments with respect to suicidal, violent/homicidal behaviors, physical altercations and develop risk mitigation interventions while guiding the primary care teams to formulate and implement commensurate care plans.
  • Develop new behavior health programs appropriate for behavior conditions prevalent at the facility.
  • Based on the individual's strengths and weaknesses, develop a psychological and behavioral care plan in collaboration with the psychiatrist and the primary care team.
  • Maintain an ongoing collaboration with the psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse practitioner, the primary care team and any involved family members in the provision of care.
  • Provide individual and group therapy as appropriate towards meeting the goals of behavior health. Provide crisis intervention as needed in individual sessions and as a member of Behavior Rapid Response Team.
  • Develop, conduct and participate in quality and safety improvement programs pertinent to behavior health. Assist the unit team to formulate a behavior safety care plan. Develop and manage behavior tracking systems to infer effectiveness of individual or systemic behavior interventions programs.
  • Serve as a Psychiatry's departmental liaison with the primary care teams, other departments and as needed, with clinicians at an acute care facility when a resident with severe mental illness is admitted to an acute care facility.
  • Participate in facility wide committees and program development activities as needed.
  • Serves as liaison with acute care facilities and community agencies as needed. For residents who get admitted to an acute care facility for behavior health reasons, maintain a liaison with the care team at the acute care facility. May provide a site visit for collaborative input during transitions.
  • May supervise Mental Health Assistants in ongoing implementation of behavior care plans.
  • Monitors and tracks high risk behaviors for objective evaluation of changes in behaviors, i.e. reduction in high risk behaviors or improvement in compliance with medications.
  • Provide pertinent behavior health education and supervision to trainees and Mental Health Assistants as needed.
  • Participate in facility's activities to maintain compliance with pertinent behavior health regulations by NYS and CMS.


  • Minimum Qualifications
    1. Valid license and current registration to practice as a Psychologist issued by the NYSED; and 2. Two (2) years of post-licensure experience, one (1) year of which must have been post-licensure supervisory experience; or three (3) years of post-licensure experience; and 3. Completion of the NYC Health + Hospitals Supervisory training within three (3) months of appointment.

    SPECIAL NOTE # = Additional Requirements for Assignment Level III
    For assignment to Assignment Level III, individuals must have the following in addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements for Assignment Level I above:
    A. The Doctoral Degree in Psychology as described under Special Note A. for Assignment Level II, and
    B. A valid license as a Psychologist issued by the New York State Department of Education; and
    C. Four years of satisfactory full-time experience in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Clinical Health Psychology, or Neuro-Psychology, of which at least one year must have been under the direct supervision of a qualified Psychologist or Psychiatrist, and at least three years must have been in a supervisory capacity as a licensed Psychologist.
    D. License Requirements for Assignment Level III
    For assignment to Assignment Level III, a valid license as a Psychologist issued by the New York State Department of Education. This license must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
