JOB DEFINITION:

Provides that portion of direct patient care which is unique to the psychiatric nurse practitioner profession and which is guided by terms set forth in the Collaborative Practice Agreement between the nurse practitioner and a staff psychiatrist who may also be the Medical Director. Diagnoses illnesses and physical conditions and performs therapeutic and corrective measures. This care is integrated into the total treatment plan for each patient, which is developed through a team-oriented approach.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Master's degree in advanced practice nursing from an accredited program. New York State license and registration as a Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry.
  • Current DEA registration.
  • Collaborative practice agreement is required between the nurse practitioner and a staff psychiatrist (who may also be the Medical Director), if the nurse practitioner has less than 3,600 hours of practice experience.
  • American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Accreditation required.


EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • Substantial clinical experience with the diagnosis and treatment of the entire spectrum of mental health and substance use disorders, in outpatient and/or inpatient settings.
  • Experience will include management of seriously mentally ill patients as well as those with psychiatric and co-occurring substance use disorders.
  • Familiarity with current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) criteria.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides supervision and medication to appropriate patients applying standards of care consistent with good medical judgment and current practice in the psychiatric community. This can include the administration of intramuscular medication when appropriate.
  • Provides psychiatric examination for the purpose of diagnostic evaluation, determination of treatment needs and prognostic factors. This includes using all reasonable methods to detect the presence of danger to self or others and collaboration with the treatment team to implement appropriate precautions.
  • Is available for consultation with staff regarding relevant issues in the patients' medical background and collaborates with appropriate professionals in the community to integrate agency treatment with overall medical care.
  • Contributes to the timely production of all necessary reports to other agencies concerning patients who they have examined and/or treated.
  • Arranges for appropriate laboratory testing indicated in collaboration with the treating physician and/or conducts any other relevant studies or tests. Implements any follow-up needed.
  • Schedules patient contacts in a manner consistent with the efficient use of time, maximizing availability for direct patient contact.
  • Collaborates with other members of the treatment team in providing integrated care. This may include appropriate outreach when indicated.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate and timely clinical case records, including, but not limited to, treatment plans, progress notes and treatment plan reviews, documenting appropriate therapeutic intervention with each client to the Agency, funding, licensing and billing authorities.
  • Facilitate sharing of data with the individuals to whom it applies to facilitate partnered decision-making and to keep clients informed of progress
  • Provides assistance in covering for other prescribing staff while they are on PTO.
  • Complete QI Training during onboarding and participate in QI refresher training as needed.
