Job Summary
Senior Clinical Engineer - Leads a biomedical engineering equipment project through all stages of its lifecycle. Works with a multidisciplinary team of internal and external customers and stakeholders to

identify the clinical, technical, and research needs, develops procurement specifications and coordinates market assessment and procurement, manage installation including configuration and pre-use testing, helps organize the in-service training, plan for transition to day-to-day operations, and document all facets of the project. May manage a project team of other clinical engineers, biomedical engineering technicians (BMET), and/or team leaders. Manages projects independently when related to medical devices and systems. Prepares capital equipment purchases and preparation of budgets with approval from Director or Assistant Director. Works with clinical or research departments to design, implement, and analyze studies for new medical equipment evaluations and trials. Evaluates safety and efficacy of medical devices. Proactively investigates cost-effectiveness of alternatives to current technologies. Leads quality improvement activities regarding medical equipment. Develops and helps implement strategies for management of technology in assigned clinical areas or technologies. Helps anticipate new technology needs and develops a proposal for purchase and replacement. Investigates clinical incidents involving medical devices and prepares and files appropriate reports (with department QA and Safety Coordinator), disseminates information regarding possible hazards and implements corrective action. Communicates to manufacturers about problems with medical devices, suggest mitigations as applicable, and work with manufacturers to implement changes. Acts as a technical consultant to the clinical and technical staff. Ensures that medical and technical personnel receive appropriate training and education in the operation of medical technology. Helps mentor clinical engineers and technical staff. Maintains a high level of knowledge of and advises hospital personnel of applicable codes and regulations regarding clinical devices. Maintains a strong level of Clinical Engineering expertise to act as a resource to the department. Serves on and may lead internal and/or external hospital committees and working groups. Provides on-call response to administrative, management and/or technical problems. Responsible for the day-to-day guidance of a technical team consisting of any or all levels of Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMET) and Clinical Engineers (CE).

Qualifications

Requirements include a bachelor's degree in Biomedical engineering, bioengineering or related field degree or related field and 5 years of experience with working in hospital based engineering projects; or in the alternative, a master's degree in Biomedical engineering, bioengineering or related field and 3 years of experience with working in hospital based engineering projects.

If Qualifying with a Bachelor's must have the following:

5 years of engineering laboratory experience with instrumentation and test equipment.

5 years of experience with investigating clinical incidents involving medical devices in a hospital.

5 years of experience with at least one or more of the following technologies:
  • Bedside medical devices and device systems
  • Biomedical equipment management and maintenance
  • Networking
  • Distributed systems
  • Web applications
  • Risk management
  • High level development software to support engineering and analytic tasks


If Qualifying with a Master's must have the following:

3 years of engineering laboratory experience with instrumentation and test equipment.

3 years of experience with investigating clinical incidents involving medical devices in a hospital.

3 years of experience with at least one or more of the following technologies:
  • Bedside medical devices and device systems
  • Biomedical equipment management and maintenance
  • Networking
  • Distributed systems
  • Web applications
  • Risk management
  • High level development software to support engineering and analytic tasks
