Essential Duties

1. Works closely with subject matter experts and client groups for projects or programs of a medium to large size to consult, conduct analysis, and identify business objectives and solutions. 2. Identifies core customer business issues and provides solution recommendations to address them. Develops necessary tools and workshops to successfully identify issues and evaluate recommendations. 3. Gathers, receives and interprets data, analyses, and reports. Develops reporting modules, ad-hoc reports, and related reporting tools. Conducts research, data gathering, data analysis, modeling, projecting and scenario analyses, with the aid of planning technology and databases. Develops and harnesses the data that is available to identify existing business issues and key drivers and develops solutions and initiatives. 4. Evaluates data gathered from multiple sources in order to support the issues, conclusions and recommendations. 5. Analyzes data with standard methods, interprets the results, and provides written summary and reporting of analysis. 6. Develops and validates queries for the successful extraction of appropriate data. 7. Develops and maintain documentations and libraries on key processes. 8. Ensures accuracy to maintain the high quality and integrity of information, data and databases. 9. Contributes to the development of unit and/or University plans and strategies. Researches, gathers data and provides recommendations. 10. Collaborates with key stakeholders and subject matter experts to establish the vision, analyze costs and benefits and support implementation. Ensures strategic and tactical plans are carried out. 11. Communicates effectively the perspective of business opportunities, needs, and risks. 12. May perform other duties as assigned.

Position Focus:

The Assistant Director of Strategic Data Analytics and Projects is a key member of the Dean's Office team, contributing to the Yale School of Public Health's (YSPH) research, education, and organizational excellence. This position provides leadership and oversight of the reporting and analytics of institutional data to gather, build and analyze data for school-wide initiatives and priority projects. The incumbent will collaborate with the associate deans and senior leaders to provide analytical support to inform data-driven decisions and develop policies. They will collaborate with leaders and cross-functional teams to foster a culture of operational improvement. They will manage projects that align with YSPH's strategic vision, overseeing planning, execution and completion of projects while offering programmatic support and tracking progress post-completion. They will facilitate the creation and documentation of new (or revised) policies and procedures related to process improvement.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on key YSPH initiatives, including financial, space, grant funding, educational, student success, belonging, and community demographics data.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and guide data-driven decisions to advance the school's mission.
  • Serve as a central YSPH resource for faculty, staff, and student needs.
  • Supervises and directs 50% effort of a Research and Project Administrator, who is responsible for managing special projects essential to the strategic and operational goals of YSPH.
Data Analytics:
  • Direct, monitor, and assess reporting and analytic needs to support YSPH's strategic vision. Prioritize development and enhancement of data systems/structures.
  • Lead development of metrics, dashboards, and standardization of faculty, staff and student metrics and analyses.
  • Design analytical approaches to address questions, proactively suggest analyses on emerging topics, and manage data/analyses requests from YSPH (or University) leadership.
  • Create and manage a relational database from existing institutional data related to strategic goals, currently stored in multiple sources. Design comprehensive databases with advanced knowledge of relevant applications impacting data analysis and reporting.
  • Develop and document operational procedures for institutional data collection, editing, verification, and management. Including working with YSPH data stewards to ensure collection and maintenance of high-quality internal data.
  • Prepare and communicate information clearly to internal and external stakeholders. Create systems for data sharing.
  • Use advanced statistical knowledge (techniques and software) to manage and analyze data. Perform descriptive and multivariate statistical analyses.
  • Stay current on higher education issues and new tools/techniques for improving data collection, storage, and reporting.

Process Improvement/Project Management:
  • Collaborate with leaders and stakeholders to identify process improvement opportunities. Develop responsive plans for streamlining existing processes, for problem-solving and/or prevention techniques.
  • Lead projects, track plans, collaborate with stakeholders/leads, and provide monthly reports to senior leaders.
  • Identify metrics to measure process efficacy and provide evidence of improvements or additional needs.
  • Support the creation of policies and procedures that foster continuous improvement.
  • Educate and train in process management methodologies through ad hoc presentations, trainings, and workshops.
  • Build relationships with colleagues across the University to streamline and improve project management.
  • Track and manage the YSPH strategic plan including key metrics to help inform and support YSPH leaders in making data-driven decisions.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Exceptional reporting and analytical skills, including interpreting data, coding structures, and business requirements to support strategic decision-making and forecasting.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to facilitate the work of diverse, cross-functional teams with limited guidance. Ability to communicate effectively (written, interpersonal, and group) at all levels of the school.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated skill in cleaning, analyzing, and visualizing data using advanced Excel functionalities (PowerQuery, PowerPivot) and coded processes (R, Python). Knowledge of external higher education database tools (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft T-SQL) and data visualization software (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Sensitivity to confidentiality and ability to maintain confidentiality of information and materials. Ability to work independently and under pressure, with mature judgment when handling sensitive issues.
