Assistant Director - Special Education

Purpose Statement
Provide instructional leadership and support to students, staff, families, and programs in the area of Special Education.

Essential Functions
  • Provide support, supervision and instructional leadership in the area of Special Education
  • Identify, evaluate and oversee implementation of curricula, instructional techniques and strategies that improve outcomes of special education students in both special education and general education settings
  • Collaborate with district, campus staff and administrators relative to Special Education instructional programs and services
  • Coordinate the provision of Extended School Year instructional programs
  • Analyze student and program data to assist in the implementation of appropriate programs and services for students with disabilities
  • Co-facilitate the Student Support Conference process
  • Communicate with parents relative to special education service delivery
  • Work with principals, coordinators and campus staff to resolve parent concerns regarding services
  • Assist in the development of special program student assignments
  • Coordinate review of transfer student IEPs and assist campuses with assignment of transfer students
  • Plan and support professional development regarding instruction and strategies for students with disabilities, including coordination of the annual Special Education Summer Institute
  • Coordinate district special education Professional Learning Communities
  • Monitor and consult in staffing of special education programs
  • Coordinate supervision and evaluation of coach and itinerant staff per district procedures and processes
  • Develop and maintain records, documentation and reports as necessary
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned
  • Meaningfully participate as member of special education leadership team
  • Co-facilitate Principal Special Education Advisory Group
  • Supervise and evaluate classified members of the Special Education district team

Minimum Qualifications

Mental Requirements
Learning Development- Level E Knowledge in a recognized professional field or technological discipline sufficient to command various principles, facts, and practical applications. Learning development is obtained by the completion of a college curriculum resulting in a bachelor's degree in a specialized field; advanced mathematics, very advanced language development, proficient understanding of practical systems.
Problem Solving - Level 3 Work situations are of sufficient scope and variety that significant interpretation and evaluation is required to successfully recognize and define problems. Highly technical judgments and/or constructive thinking involved. Alternative solutions must be considered and short-term action plans must be developed and sequenced.
Physical Requirements
Physical Skill - Level A Basic level of learned physical skill is required. No special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling of everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job satisfactorily.
Physical Effort - Level 1 Minimal physical exertion is required. Most job time is spent sitting with occasional walking. Occasional lifting, guiding, and carrying of lightweight materials or equipment.

Human Relations Skill- Level B Job requires patience in communication and well-developed verbal skills to exchange technical or complex information with individuals or small, informal groups. skills in establishing harmonious relationships and gaining cooperation are important.

Additional Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of State and Federal laws related to Special Education
  • Knowledge of developmental behavior patterns of students with disabilities
  • Knowledge of Gilbert Public School district programs and services

Experience, Education, and Certifications
Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience as a Special Education Teacher. Minimum of three (3) years as a campus or district Administrator.
Education: Master's Degree in Educational Leadership. Master's Degree in Special Education Preferred
Certifications/Clearances: Valid Arizona Standard Professional Principal Certificate. Current professional licensure and/or certification in the area of professional Special Education practice. Must possess a valid Arizona DPS Level One IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card while employed.
