Position Overview

This position is accountable for managing, directing, and controlling the activities of the Bridge Investigations and Repair Plans Unit to ensure timely cost-effective plans for repairing deteriorated and damaged structures including renovating structures through retrofitting. The incumbent develops and reviews maintenance practices and policies, including managing the content in the Repairs Section of the Structural Services Manual.

Essential Functions

  • Ensures rapid completion of emergency and non-emergency repairs through management of personnel in the Bridge Investigations and Repair Plans Unit.
  • Develops and implements the refinement of innovative repair procedures to affect savings in time and effort leading to increased production.
  • Provides economical and viable solutions to overcome structural deficiencies.
  • Provides structural expertise on defects found on the annual joint inspection of major structures over boundary rivers for corrective repairs.
  • Determines changes in procedures of the Bridge Investigations and Repair Plans Unit that will affect the department and prepares supportive data for administrative decisions.
  • Oversees maintenance of a current structure inventory system.
  • Motivates, evaluates, and develops subordinates to maintain a high level of employee morale and work performance.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Eight years of experience in civil engineering including three years supervising staff and managing engineering functions.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Extensive knowledge of civil engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative work relationships.
  • Ability to interpret and enforce organizational policies.
  • Strong oral and/or written communication skills.

  • Successful completion of a background screening.
