The Stanford Program in Law, Science & Technology (LST) addresses complex issues at the intersection of law and technology by providing innovative coursework, raising professional and public awareness, and contributing to international dialogue, all while leveraging Stanford's faculty and staff expertise, alumni network, and Silicon Valley location to equip students and professionals with the knowledge to navigate legal and ethical challenges in fields like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, biotechnology, legaltech and intellectual property. CodeX - The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics is a constituent center of the Program in Law, Science at Technology with the mission to research and develop technologies that improve the efficiency of the legal system. The mandate of the Associate Director, CodeX & LST is to direct complex research projects and other programs of strategic import in consultation with senior leadership. The position oversees and administers key CodeX & LST research programs and outreach to constituencies at Stanford and beyond. Additionally, the position initiates, develops, and implements programs to enhance opportunities for CodeX & LST investigators and affiliates with multidisciplinary collaborators around the world.
Job Purpose
The Associate Director collaborates with and reports to the Executive Director of CodeX & LST to develop, implement, and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of both programs. This role develops and manages research initiatives at the intersection of law, technology, and computational legal science while participating in strategy development, long-range planning, and partnership cultivation. The Associate Director serves as a key liaison between academic researchers, industry partners, and legal technology innovators to advance the centers' missions.

The expected pay range for this position is $111,866 to $146,847 per annum.

Core Duties
- Develop and manage research programs, including identifying topics for research and engaging in research projects with Faculty Directors and affiliated faculty, conducting research activities, assigning resources, and making program improvement recommendations
- Identify, recommend, and implement opportunities for new research directions
- Develop and maintain academic partnerships, especially with other initiatives focused on legal technology and AI
- Develop and maintain industry partnerships, particularly with law firms and technology companies
- Source, collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve Center goals
- Represent the centers to the broader University, external community, and other stakeholders
- Create and manage content for center websites and other publications, including reports, proposals, policy briefings, and newsletters
- Write and/or edit complex content for proposals, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities
- Develop outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships, and fundraising/funding
- Contribute to and inform on strategic program/planning and related funding and financial stability, while partnering with External Relations.
- May co-teach courses and policy labs, oversee course administration, and advise in curriculum development
- Coach and mentor center staff and Research Fellows
- Work cooperatively with other law school and broader university initiatives to advance the educational and research mission of Stanford University
Minimum Requirements/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education & Experience
- Advanced degree required (JD or equivalent preferred) and three years of relevant experience in area of specialization or combination of relevant education and experience
- Research experience is highly desirable
- Experience managing a budget and developing financial plans
- Experience developing program partnerships and funding sources
- Experience running an academic center or initiative preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
- Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
- Ability to oversee and direct staff.
- Basic knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans.
Preferred Abilities:
- Excellent project management skills with ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
