Astellas Pharma Canada (APCA) is currently searching for a Lead, Global Field Medical Excellence.

Description:

As the Lead, Global Field Medical Excellence (FME), you will provide global strategic leadership to drive the success of the field medical organization by ensuring the highest standards for, and delivery of, impactful external scientific engagements with a consistent approach worldwide. Your primary focus will be to elevate global field medical capabilities through development and execution of global programs and initiatives in collaboration with regional field medical leaders and other internal stakeholders. Provides input into defining and coordinates the core field medical strategy in partnership with field medical teams in the regions. Establishes and maintains quality standards and oversees consistent and efficient implementation across field medical teams worldwide. You must understand industry best practices/trends as well as emerging technologies while considering local regulatory requirements to deploy scalable and sustainable global solutions to enable a best in class, value-driven field medical organization.

Essential Job Duties:

Leadership:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) on the Global FME Dedicated Core Team to establish and maintain high-quality standards and ensure consistent, compliant implementation worldwide.
  • Responsible for the coordination and quality oversight between field medical operations in the regions in support of the overall MA strategy and business objectives
  • Provides thought leadership and coordinates regional thought leadership and subject matter expertise, bringing external environmental insights to FME to support field medical performance across Astellas regions.


Functional Strategy:

  • Ensures adherence to the FME Dedicated Core Team agreed strategy and deliverables and supports the evolution of the field medical organization forward with innovative thinking to evolve and meet stakeholder needs.
  • Support development and implementation of core foundational functional strategies across all regions spanning scientific engagement models, insights, medical expert engagement planning, account planning, coaching framework, field impact assessment/benchmarking, field medical functional onboarding, clinical trial support framework, omnichannel, etc.
  • Owns driving implementation of global standards and process for FME, supporting the Head, Global FME:
  • Addresses key region and global stakeholder issues related to implemented global processes.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve core processes in MA Standards for FME based on qualitative feedback and metrics analysis.
  • Serves as business lead for process improvement initiatives related to subject area.
  • Proactive application of risk mitigation strategies that minimize corporate risk in partnership with Global Quality and Risk Management


Capabilities:

  • Actively promotes a culture of continuous improvement through the development and roll out of training programs; and drives a coaching discipline that engenders a culture of excellence and medical value in field medical activities.
  • In conjunction with MA training functions globally and regionally and regional FME leaders, assesses and supports development of relevant trainings to enhance field medical capabilities on role-specific skills and relevant systems for field medical.
  • Contribute to and/or lead development of enduring materials and programs (e.g. live sessions, LMS modules, work aids, etc.) in collaboration with MA Training teams to optimize end user onboarding and adoption of new and existing field medical platforms, processes, and capabilities.
  • Supports global Field Medical Platforms Leads, Data Solutions and Analytics and Innovation Capability and Enablement teams for relevant field medical systems/processes and ensures cross-regional coordination and alignment to field medical priorities.


Value Impact:

  • Responsible for the coordination and worldwide consistency of field medical activities and reporting
  • Proactively identifies best practices and sharing across geographies of field medical activities.
  • Supports local and regional adherence to global processes by working closely with regional FME leaders, process improvement and QA functions.
  • Creates alignment and supports regional monitoring, reporting and quality improvement of key performance metrics for field medical.


External Engagement:

  • Enables implementation of standardized approach for external engagement that results in efficient and impactful scientific engagements by field medical.
  • Coordinates and works closely with Medical Affairs leaders (e.g. regional FME Leads, regional Field Medical Team Leads, Platform Leads, Learning and Capabilities Lead, Operations Leads, TA leads, CMT members, etc.) to drive excellence in external scientific engagement activities and insights communication.


Internal Partnerships Collaboration:

  • Provides subject matter expertise and consultation to MA regions with a focus on strategic and tactical operational planning and execution in field medical activities spanning scientific engagement models, insights, medical expert engagement planning, account planning, coaching framework, field impact assessment/benchmarking, field medical onboarding, clinical trial support framework, omnichannel, etc.
  • Collaborates with Medical Affairs colleagues across geographies (e.g. Medical Communications, regional FME leads, regional Field Medical Team Leads, Platform Leads, Learning and Capabilities Leads, Operations Leads, TA Leads, Data Solutions Analytics, global Evidence Generation Operations, and Health Economics and Outcomes Research).
  • Engages cross-functionally with non-MA departments, such as Human Resources, Ethics Compliance, Regulatory, Legal, Clinical Development, Pharmacovigilance and Commercial as needed to advance FME initiatives in support of local brand team needs.


Innovation:

  • Attends relevant industry meetings to stay abreast with current best practices and new innovations in relevant MA activities for FME.


Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum bachelor's degree, or equivalent, in science or health-related field is required.
  • 6+ years of relevant industry and functional experience
  • 3+ years of experience in stakeholder facing role or operational support of stakeholder facing role(s): Medical Science Liaison/Field Team Lead/FME Lead
  • Strong organizational and project management skills to coordinate multiple initiatives and ensure timely delivery.
  • Deep understanding of medical affairs processes, scientific engagement models and field medical operations
  • Deep understanding of healthcare landscape and demonstrated ability to think innovatively and adapt strategies to evolving stakeholder needs.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess qualitative feedback and metrics for process/quality improvement.
  • Fluent in written and verbal business English
  • Strong interpersonal skills (verbal and written) with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across various teams and departments, fostering strong internal and external partnerships.
  • Must be willing to travel up to 15% of the time.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in science or business (MD, PharmD, PhD, MBA)
  • At least 5 years of Medical Science Liaison/Field Team Lead/FME Lead experience.
  • Proven track record of leadership in a global or regional capacity for medical affairs
  • Familiarity with local/regional compliance and regulatory standards
  • Work experience across multiple cultures and countries / regions.
  • Strong leadership presence and ability to present and engage with senior leaders.
  • Enables creative problem solving, encourages unique solutions, and effectively solves challenging problems.
