Position Summary

The current opportunity is Limited Term through August 2026.

Under general direction, provides non-clinical case management, treatment coordination, and program support for the mental health diversion court program or other collaborative/specialty court programs.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This is an entry or journey level classification. Incumbents perform professional administrative and other duties within one or more specialized court programs, and/or oversee and coordinate the activities of projects within such programs. Most programs include a social service component, and thus knowledge of social service principles and practices are required.
Typical Duties

Typical Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepares, compiles, and obtains reports on client progress and achievement, communicating with clients, medical professionals, and other service providers to ensure completion of necessary release forms, progress reports, and other documentation.
  • Facilitates completion of program requirements; locates resources for clients through research and networking activities; and assists in developing contracts with service providers.
  • Tracks client progress; ensures reports and other documentation are available for judicial officers and justice partners as needed.
  • Attends court sessions and team meetings; provides updates on client status; coordinates with justice partners.
  • Collects and compiles data on program success and participation; supports research on best practices and program development.
  • Builds and maintains cooperative relationships with treatment agencies, community organizations and businesses, the Probation Department, District Attorney's Office, Public Defender's Office, law enforcement, and County Behavioral Health.
  • Provides support to judicial officers and courtroom operations.
  • Assists in researching grant opportunities to fund access to service providers and prepare grant proposals.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Any combination of education, training, and experience that would provide the necessary knowledge and abilities. Normally, this would include:
I. Possession of a bachelor's degree with major coursework in psychology, sociology, social work, criminal justice, public health, or related subjects AND one (1) year relevant work experience in probation, criminal justice, court operations, behavioral health, social work, community organizations, law, or related field.

II. Possession of a graduate degree with major coursework in psychology, sociology, social work, criminal justice, public health, or related subjects. Current graduate students in relevant fields, whose schedules permit full-time work, are encouraged to apply.

OR
III. Possession of an associate degree and four (4) years relevant experience in probation, criminal justice court operations, behavioral health, social work, community organizations, law, or related field.

Other Requirements: Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record may be required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Working knowledge of:
  • Court procedures and practices, particularly in the area of diversion or treatment court programs.
  • The needs, challenges, and behaviors of justice involved individuals and individuals suffering from mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Programs and resources available for mental health, substance abuse, and related issues.
  • Microsoft Office programs including basic functions of Outlook, Word, and Excel or similar software, and Court computer systems or case management software.

Ability to:
  • Establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with judicial officers, court staff, clients, justice and community partners, medical professionals, and the public.
  • Prepare, compile, and organize appropriate casework documentation.
    Navigate healthcare/medical system and community resources.
  • Research laws, regulations, and policies on court and healthcare protocols and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Compile numerical records of program participations and outcomes and perform simple mathematical calculations.
  • Present information to judicial officers and justice partners.
  • Schedule meetings, track deadlines, maintain organized records.
  • Exercise sound judgement within general policy guidelines.
  • Exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Work in potentially stressful, emotional, and confrontational situations and respond appropriately in crises.
  • Continue learning about best practices in diversion and treatment court programming.

Retirement Plan:
Tax deferred contributory system under the County Retirement Act of 1937. This is a defined benefit plan fully integrated with Social Security. Employee may elect to make additional contributions into a separate 457 Deferred Compensation Account up to the IRS annual maximum.
