Database Administrator
WELCOME TO SANTA MONICA COLLEGE! This critical position will perform lead, expert level professional work in administering, planning, developing, and implementing strategic data models to ensure the availability, optimum performance, accessibility, security, efficiency and integrity of databases that are an integral part of District-wide applications. This position is scheduled to work40 hours per week, 12 months per year on the Santa Monica College Main Campus.
Please note that all candidates must have authorization to work in the United States; the District does not have the ability to provide sponsorship.

What You Will Bring to the College
Our ideal candidate will possess substantial experience independently performing the full scope of database administration responsibilities within an Oracle environment. Additionally, it is critical that the selected employee have experience monitoring and maintaining the Banner system. Incumbents will be responsible for planning, analyzing, installing, configuring, patching and upgrading databases, as well as troubleshooting any related issues. Incumbents will provide support to users and collaborate with other IT colleagues to ensure successful implementation of application, software, and system maintenance. Experience with Oracle APEX is preferred, but not required. The ideal candidate will have experience managing databases on Unix-based systems and performing Unix Shell scripting. Finally, the ideal candidate will also have experience with Weblogic and Tomcat application servers and be knowledgeable about data and server security.
Remote Work Program
Santa Monica College has a remote work program option available for employees whose job duties do not require a physical presence on College property. This position will include a combination of in-person and remote work; as such, candidates must be available to come into the office as assigned. Currently, employees must come into the office one day per week, though the in-office requirement will be greater at the start of employment as the employee learns the District's database systems and procedures. Remote work arrangements cannot be guaranteed prior to the date of hire, and must go through a review and approval process.

Salary Placement
New Employees: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. A new permanent classified employee may request a higher salary placement based on recruitment issues and/or additional training and experience which greatly exceeds the minimum requirements. Please note that salary placement above the third step requires additional approvals by Santa Monica College executive staff.

Current Employees: Upon promotion, the new salary for a current, permanent employee is based on Merit Rule 12.2.7. In accordance with this rule, employees are entitled to at least a one-step (5%) salary increase, and may be eligible for advanced step placement in accordance with established criteria.
About the Selection Process
The selection process tentatively consists of a Qualifications Appraisal Interview (weighted 100%), which may be preceded by a Training & Experience Evaluation (pass/fail). Candidates must be successful on all test parts to be placed on the eligibility list. The eligibility list created from this recruitment will be used to fill any vacancies that occur during the six month life of the eligibility list, including full-time and/or part-time, permanent and/or temporary positions.

Santa Monica College reserves the right to modify the stated test components and weights prior to the administration of any test.

Certain positions within this classification may require employees to routinely and consistently read, speak, and/or write using a language other than English. Testing of eligible candidates' bilingual proficiency will occur, as needed, as the District identifies positions that require this skill.

Examples of Duties

Develops data models and long-range comprehensive database plans to support information requirements.

Develops goals and objectives to implement long-range comprehensive database plans, and conducts ongoing assessment of future implementation needs.

Performs database and application server administration duties, including database and application server and database tools and utilities installation, customization, storage and memory allocation, monitoring, tuning, and upgrades.

Determines, implements, and enhances standards on database security and develops and performs data recovery procedures to ensure backup and recovery strategies are tested and in place.

Analyzes, designs, and implements data migration and conversion plans.

Documents the database schemas; develops and maintains the data element dictionaries; establish and monitor standard table and field naming conventions.

Develops policies and procedures, and monitors and controls the redundancy of data to ensure the quality and integrity of the database environment.

Works with internal and external resources and provides recommendations on database management solutions.

Responds to database and application server problems or emergencies, and monitors database resource usage reports and performs database capacity planning.

Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirement:
Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or closely related field from an accredited university or college.

Experience Requirement:
Four (4) years of experience with databases, database application servers, Web application servers, and n-tier systems architecture administration in a large-scale Oracle environment.

Education/Experience Equivalency:
Experience and/or education of the same kind, level or amount as required in the minimum qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Santa Monica College offers a comprehensive benefits package including vacation, holiday, and sick leave as well as medical, dental, vision, and life insurance for permanent positions. Permanent full-time positions of 35 hours or more receive fully paid District benefits. Permanent position assignments of 20 to 34 hours per week receive a pro-rated benefits package as outlined in CSEA Chapter 36 Bargaining Agreement.
