Position Purpose: Administer anesthesia and anesthesia-related care in collaboration and consultation with attending anesthesiologists, surgeons, and other medical professionals for patient care services including but not limited to surgery, perinatal services and emergency response. Administers anesthetics within scope of practice and in accordance with clinical privileges.

Essential Functions

1. Participates in pre-anesthetic preparation and evaluation.

a. Anesthesia equipment and supplies are prepared appropriately for procedures.

b. Evaluates the patient pre-operatively by interviewing and examining the patient; assesses data and selects appropriate anesthetic.

c. Procedural consent is verified prior to each procedure.

d. Patient specific anesthesia plan of care is formulated from the pre-surgical assessment and is reviewed with attending anesthesiologist, physician, podiatrist or dentist.

2. Implements, monitors and adjusts patient's physiologic condition as appropriate for type of anesthesia and specific patient's needs.

3. Transfers the responsibility for care of the patient to other qualified providers post-operatively to assure continuity of care and patient safety.

a. Report and completed documentation is provided upon transfer of the patient from intra-operative to post-operative care provider.

b. Acute and chronic post-operative pain management modalities are implemented.

c. Medications, fluids and ventilatory support are selected and ordered to facilitate recovery from anesthesia.

d. The patient is discharged from the post-anesthesia care unit and provided with post-anesthesia follow-up, evaluation and care.

4. Participates in additional areas of responsibility, which are within the expertise of the individual CRNA, for example responding to cardiac arrests and elective intubations.

5. Ensures appropriate documentation to sufficiently charge for services rendered.

Marginal Functions

Performs both essential and marginal job functions in a safe manner as identified by Saint Anthony Hospital and the respective department while adhering to the Hospital's confidentiality norms and standards. Actively and consistently demonstrates the core values of Saint Anthony Hospital in all interactions with others.

Assumes responsibility for knowing and maintaining established hospital and departmental objectives, policies/procedures including general sanitation, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

Participates in performance activities including problem identification, data collection, solution selection, implementation and evaluation. Also assists in the care and maintenance of departmental equipment and supplies as appropriate.

Participates in staff meetings and other inservices, meetings or committees as required.

Maintains educational requirements for licensure and certification.

General Job Requirements
Holds current license as a registered nurse in the State of Illinois.
Holds current license as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the State of Illinois.
Holds Masters Degree in Nursing and is Certified as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
Become privileged and credentialed by the Medical Staff in accordance with the Medical Staff Bylaws and remain in good standing.

Machines, tools, equipment and work aids required: General office equipment; Other Equipment Includes: Anesthesia carts, anesthesia machines, infusion pumps, and other patient care equipment.
