Associate Clinical Lab Medical Director
Position Summary:
The Associate Clinical Lab Medical Director provides clinical laboratory expertise to providers through advising on test selection, interpretation of results, and utilization of laboratory resources. The position oversees compliance with regulatory standards, provides laboratory stewardship oversight, ensures the accuracy and quality of laboratory results and proficiency testing, and performs many delegated duties of the CLIA laboratory medical director including validation of new test methods, representing the laboratory on hospital committees, and supporting continuing education for laboratory staff.
Responsibilities:
Oversees and manages clinical laboratory testing to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance with regulatory standards
Provides consultation and expertise to healthcare providers regarding laboratory test selection, interpretation of test results, and appropriate utilization of laboratory resources
Leads test method validation and verification work for new laboratory analyzers or testing
Reviews/approves orders for esoteric and high-cost laboratory testing to ensure appropriate test selection and clinical utility
Reviews electronic health record (EHR) order set build for appropriate laboratory test selection
Collaborates with other healthcare professionals through interdisciplinary rounding, teams and/or committees to provide comprehensive patient care
Performs many duties of high-complexity laboratory medical director that can be delegated per applicable regulations; may serve as associate medical director with board certification
Develops laboratory testing algorithms based on current clinical guidelines and best practices
Leads and directs the work of others including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance appraisals
Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function
Performs other related duties as assigned
Competent to meet age-specific needs of the unit assigned
Requirements and Minimum Qualifications:
Doctorate degree in chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science required
Minimum 5 years' moderate and/or high-complexity clinical laboratory testing experience required
Board certified by an agency approved by HHS for high-complexity laboratory director preferred
Working Conditions:
Must be able to lift and move up to 35 lbs
Must be able to stoop or crouch
Required to bend
Must be able to reach arms above or below shoulder height
Must be able to maintain a standing and/or sitting position
Must be able to communicate and exchange accurate information
Typical equipment used in a clinical job
Exposure to needles, blood and body fluids, etc.
Exposure to hazardous chemicals, acids, cleaning solution, disinfectants, soups, etc.
Exposure to infectious wastes
