POSITION SUMMARY:
The staff Occupational Therapist is directly responsible tothe Clinical Coordinator, and/or his or her designee, and has theresponsibility for overall direction, utilization, supervision, and instructionof professional and supportive staff, volunteers, and students in their area ofthe Rehabilitation Department.

Providing and assisting other therapists, COTA and supportpersonnel in hospital, private home, or rehab setting to provide rehabilitationtherapy to patients. The worker occasionally will be required to assist withbiohazardous material and will be required to educated in its handling.

No unusual hazard risks. May be exposed to muscular strainin supporting, lifting, and assisting patients.
Individual is considered at risk for experience to bloodbornepathogens, infections and infectious wastes, and minimal hazards; re: chemicalsused for cleaning/sanitizing/disinfecting.
Vision must be correctable to view computer screens and readprinted information. Specific visionabilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, colorvision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.

ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS:
Supervision
- Help to plan, lead, organize and control the occupational services department
- Monitors and directs ordering of supplies and equipment
- Oversees maintenance of all equipment and general management of department
Evaluations
- Responds to requests for services and initiates referrals when appropriate
- To be responsible for the evaluation of patients referred for Occupational Therapy through Home Care, Nursing Home, and/or In/Out-patient
- Determines patient's need for Occupational Therapy services either before or after referral
- Evaluates the patient to obtain and interpret data necessary for treatment, including documenting the evaluations and treatment process
Treatment
- Refer to and supervise the work of the COTA according to the good practice standards of the profession
- Work with patient, medical staff, family or any others to prepare and carry out the treatment plan
- Administer standardized and non-standardized assessments in the following areas-
- Independent living/daily living skills and performance
- Sensorimotor skills and performance
- Cognitive skills and performance
- Psychosocial adaptations
- Therapeutic Adaptations
- Orthotics
- Prosthetics
- Assertive/Adaptive equipment
- Develop long and short term goals to develop, improve, and/or restore the performance of necessary functions; compensate for dysfunction; and/or minimize debilitation
- Formulate, in collaboration with client, family, significant others, and staff, in discharge and follow-up plans
- To maintain a patient treatment schedule consistent with the needs of the department/facility
- To confer with the person(s) most closely associated with active management of the patient and to keep them informed of any additional patient needs, treatment modification, and/or process
- To treat patients of all ages (e.g. infants, children, adolescents, adults, geriatrics, elderly), race, creed, gender, and disability without bias or prejudice
- To respect and understand the patient's right to treatment and right to involvement in treatment decisions
- To practice ethical responsibility based on the cultural, ethnic, and religious beliefs of the patients serves and applicable law
Records and Reports
To be responsible for thepreparation and submitting of department/facility reports, assuringconfidentiality of all records, including:
- Evaluation reports/summaries
- Discharge reports/summaries
- Progress reports to referring physicians andagencies
- Current progress notes on all patients
- Special reports requested by the Administrationand/or his designee
- Daily attendance records and summaries of same
Professional Status and Public Relations
- Participate in in-service programs to promote awareness and understanding of occupational therapy
Meetings and Conferences
- To attend Department Manager Meetings as required
- To attend regular department/facility meetings to:
- Report and discuss activities and needs ofdepartment
- Discuss patient's needs and progress
- Discuss reports and records
- Discuss expansion in terms of the future goalsand needs
- To see that all department routines andprocedures are carried out as outlined
Professional Status and Public Relations
- To keep abreast of new techniques and trends inthe field of Rehab Services
- To attend conventions, meetings, or specialcourses whenever possible, and to share with department/facility personnelinformation gained thereby
- To prepare and give talks to community groups asrequested
- To maintain good public relations with allcommunity records

- To keep current and adhere to policies andprocedures as enumerated in the Policy and Procedures Manual of the department
- To actively participate and adhere in allpolicies and procedures as enumerated in the risk management program
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

- Qualifications
- Graduate of an approved school of Occupational Therapy with a preferred minimum of two (2) years department/facility experience
- Must have, or be eligible for the State Licensure
- Work experience
- Must be a graduate of American Occupational Therapy Association approved school; current state licensure is required
- None required, but 1-2 years preferred
- Education/Certifications/Licenses
- Occupational Therapy license in Iowa
- Must maintain state of Iowa continuing education requirements
- Must have verification card of current instruction in CPR
- Valid Iowa Drivers License

- Operate office equipment such as computers, printers, copy machine, calculator, facsimile, and scanners
- Ability to understand oral and written instructions regarding set-up, operations of equipment, preparations of patients for treatment and other related activities
- Must be able to apply the theory of Occupational Therapy; have the ability and competency to operate the equipment of his or her position and profession
