The Chief External Affairs and Transformation Officer (CEATO) is an executive leader responsible for advancing the mission and vision of the United Way of the National Capital Area by leading and enhancing strategic impact initiatives, communications and brand marketing, and external relations. The CEATO reports directly to the President and CEO.
This position involves 1) developing and executing comprehensive strategies that deliver measurable community-level impact and 2) cultivating deep partnerships to enhance UWNCA's engagement with key external stakeholders, including policymakers, the media, and private, philanthropic, and nonprofit partners. This executive leader will also lead the various teams responsible for increasing the organization's external visibility through strategic marketing and communications channels while ensuring that its impact is measurable and aligned with its goals. This executive leader will drive programs and initiatives by strategically managing external partnerships, internal data analysis, and program evaluation to achieve significant social change within the communities served.

Leadership - Visionary leader who can develop goals and strategies and productively leverage partnerships for community engagement and contributions. Proven work experience in a fundraising environment and a comprehensive knowledge of the science of fundraising.
Talent Management - Proven experience building and leading a high-performing, diverse development/fundraising team. Provide ongoing leadership and support to the Development/Fundraising team to identify future leaders and encourage professional growth. Ensures the team has leadership, skills, tools, resources, and training to be successful. Work with teams to set department and personal goals in support of overall United Way NCA's vision and community goals. Actively support team members in working with other departments and creating cross-organizational collaboration.
Results Driven - Dedicated to shared and measurable goals for the common good, creating, resourcing, scaling, and leveraging strategies and innovations. Proven track record of raising significant dollars and achieving revenue goals.
Operational Excellence - Develop, monitor, and manage departmental expense budgets within the constraints of United Way NCA's financial plans. Develop and monitor United Way NCA's revenue goals and budgets with key managers to meet and exceed organizational and community goals and needs. Identify specific methods and tools to ensure interdepartmental collaboration. Responsible for data gathering, research, and analysis for goal setting and projections. Prepares sales reports and other reports as assigned.
Entrepreneurial - A creative, critical thinker, self-motivated. Excellent strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and follow-through. Achievement-oriented; shows initiative and enthusiasm while demonstrating uncompromising responsibility, courage, and self-confidence, even in the face of difficulties.

Key Responsibilities:

- Lead the development and implementation of community impact strategies that align with the United Way of the National Capital Area's Community Commitment, seeking to transform our region and to change the story for thousands of people in a meaningful way.
- Lead the development of measurable goals and performance indicators to track progress and to evaluate the effectiveness of community impact initiatives.
- Conduct needs assessments and market analyses to identify critical community issues and opportunities for intervention based on the needs of priority populations.
II. Partnership Development and Management:
- Cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, including civic leaders and private and public sector partner organizations.
- Foster strong relationships with community stakeholders, including nonprofit organizations, government agencies, businesses, and philanthropic funders.
- Build and manage collaborative partnerships to leverage resources and expertise, facilitating collective impact initiatives.
- Facilitate cross-sector collaborations to address complex community challenges.
III. Program Oversight and Evaluation:
- Oversee the implementation and management of the United Way of the National Capital Area's community impact programs, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and quality standards.
- Conduct ongoing monitoring and evaluation of programs using data-driven approaches to measure outcomes and identify areas for improvement.
- Analyze program data to inform decision-making and identify opportunities for optimization.
- Manage data collection and analysis to assess program effectiveness and drive continuous improvement.
- Collaborate closely with the United Way of the National Capital Area's Chief Development Officer and the Development team to build and sustain relationships with potential donors and cultivate major gifts.
- Oversee communications and marketing strategies to effectively convey the organization's impact and to promote the brand and various partnership initiatives externally.
- Identify and secure funding opportunities from diverse sources, including corporate donations, individual giving, and federal grants.
- Develop compelling external campaigns, communications, and marketing plans to advocate for policy changes and community investments that align with the United Way of the National Capital Area's mission.
- Advocate for the United Way of the National Capital Area's mission by representing it publicly before the media, at public forums, conferences, and community events.
- Lead and mentor a team of external affairs, marketing, communications, and community impact professionals, providing guidance and support to achieve organizational goals.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability within the Community Impact and External Affairs team.
- Build capacity within the team by providing training and development opportunities.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Master's degree in social work, public policy, non-profit management, or a related field.
- Extensive experience in corporate and philanthropic social impact, community development, program evaluation, and strategic planning within the nonprofit and private sectors.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong partnerships with diverse stakeholders and manage complex relationships with key, influential stakeholders.
- Expertise in external affairs at the federal and local policy levels.
- Proven track record of leading complex projects and achieving measurable results.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Expertise in data analysis and using data to inform decision-making.
- Passion for social justice and commitment to creating positive community change.
- Experience in major gift fundraising
