Description:

Reporting to the General Manager, Parts & Supply Chain, the Director, Purchasing oversees purchasing functions across all SMS Equipment regions.

This position is responsible for securing reliable, cost-effective suppliers and optimizing supply chain operations. The ideal candidate will possess excellent leadership abilities, a thorough understanding of procurement processes, and a track record of implementing purchasing strategies that align with organizational objectives.

Collaborating with Operations Managers, Parts Managers, and other branch staff, this role ensures consistent purchasing practices across all regions within SMS Equipment and directs capital equipment purchasing to optimize asset allocation.

This position is based in Acheson, AB. This position offers a hybrid work environment.

This role will have a base salary and incentive bonus compensation structure.

Responsibilities:

  • Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing purchasing team. Promote a collaborative, results-driven environment, ensuring professional growth and succession planning within the department.

  • Purchasing Management: Drive the development and implementation of procurement strategies aimed at reducing costs, improving efficiency, and ensuring product quality. Monitor and analyze market trends to identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Supplier Management: Develop and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, ensuring reliable sourcing of quality goods and services. Negotiate contracts and terms to ensure the best possible pricing and service levels.
  • Travel Management: Oversee the company's travel process, collaborating on tools and workflows, leading system enhancements, driving change management, and training employees on updates.

  • Transportation & Freight: Manage and negotiate domestic and international freight rates, ensuring optimal costs and shipping efficiency. Ensuring compliance with negotiated contracts and regulations while managing relationships with brokers and partners, and address inquiries with government agencies.

  • Sustainability & ESG: Actively participate in ESG and sustainability planning, strategy meetings, and initiatives to enhance the organization's sustainable practices in purchasing and transportation.
  • Indigenous Relations: Facilitate and lead initiatives under the PAIR program, including planning, training, and event participation, to support SMS's commitment to Indigenous partnerships.

Qualifications:

This position requires an undergraduate degree in business, supply chain or a related field and a minimum of 10 years experience leading a national purchasing function. This position requires the candidate to have at least 5 year of leadership experience with demonstrated ability to coach, mentor and manage a large team.

The work requires a collaborative leader with an in depth understanding of purchasing best practices and management, with the demonstrated ability to implement strategy and processes to support Company goals.

  • Exceptional planning and project management capabilities to ensure timely completion of initiatives.
  • Proficiency in managing contract agreements, including monitoring performance and compliance.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data, prepare detailed reports, and generate accurate projections.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to navigate diverse interactions using tact and diplomacy.
  • Advanced proficiency in computer applications, particularly in purchasing and inventory management systems.
  • Knowledge of parts distribution and management practices is considered an asset.
