As a Director of Accounting (Hybrid) you will join our Calgary, AB office as part of our TEAM. While this role will be hybrid, it will be based out of the Calgary, AB area.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
Reporting to the MES VP Operational Finance, the Director of Accounting is a key member of the COE team that will operate as a partner to the COE contract team, billing team, and the financial planning and analysis team, and will work closely with the MEG corporate finance teams. The role will also interact with operational project managers and other functional leaders to ensure the business policies, procedures and practices adhere to the proper accounting principles and internal control framework.
The COE is a newly established structure. The Director of Accounting will work closely with MEG Corporate Accounting and the MES VP Operational Finance to determine the responsibilities of the Accounting COE, as they will evolve and increase as we move forward. The buildout of day-to-day activities will occur over time as delineation of duties between the Accounting COE, Corporate Accounting, and FP&A teams are determined. This role requires a proactive individual capable of both executing tasks and building a high performing team.
This position may require occasional travel, both domestic and international, to meet with operational and finance teams. This role is expected to:

- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Accounting COE including overseeing staff located in Calgary, AB and Little Rock, AR (U.S.).
- Lead the preparation, coordination and management of the financial accounting and compliance functions.
- Build strong working relationships with other COE teams, Corporate Finance, GBS, Audit, Workday support and Operational teams, to continuously improve the collaboration across the support functions.
- Develop a deep knowledge of the underlying financial transactions in Workday and an understanding of the overall reporting process; proactively identify and implement process improvements and efficiencies to achieve more timely and accurate results in the accounting and GL close process.
- Work closely with the Contracting COE team to review large and complex customer contracts for proper revenue recognition under US GAAP.
- Review and approve accruals at month-end to ensure proper financial statement cutoff.
- Review P&L for accuracy.
- Prepare analysis and conclusions for subjective or complex accruals.
- Provide support for the quarterly reviews and annual audit process to provide timely support and resolve any issues or outcomes arising from internal and external audits.
- Document and ensure compliance with processes, and internal controls, supporting the implementation of best practices within MES.
- Support the quarterly and annual tax provision process with the internal tax manager and external tax providers.
- Support all aspects of the monthly, quarterly and annual tax compliance program with the corporate tax manager and the local tax service professionals.
- Support the due diligence process for potential acquisitions and support the integration efforts and purchase accounting.
- Lead the research and analysis of new accounting standards or changes to compliance requirements that impact MES and recommend accounting treatment for changes.
- Assist the FP&A team with financial reporting, flux analysis, KPI measurements, budgeting, forecasting and projects as needed.
- Manage a growing team of accountants, delegate tasks effectively and provide ongoing coaching and mentoring.
- Foster a collaborative and results-oriented team environment to motivate and inspire high performance from team members to achieve departmental goals.
What We Are Looking For

Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance or equivalent from an accredited university.
- Hold an active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA).
- Minimum 10 years in a top 10 public accounting firm (Big 4, RSM, BDO, Grant Thornton, etc.) and a minimum of 3 additional years working in a large company finance team with progressive hands-on experience, preferably in a service-based organization.
- Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and technical accounting knowledge, SOX internal control frameworks, and financial reporting requirements. Expertise in U.S. GAAP revenue recognition principles.
- Solution oriented mindset with the ability to identify issues, investigate and recommend resolutions.
- Strong time management skills; able to effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline driven environment with the ability to prioritize.
- Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems, with experience in project accounting modules preferred. Workday Financials a plus.
- Exceptional Excel skills with the ability to manage, analyze and simplify large amounts of data.
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
- Proven leadership and team management abilities, with experience in leading and developing teams to achieve organizational goals.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with a strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Experience in construction, engineering or other service and project-based industries is a plus.
