Job Summary:
The Coating Manager will be responsible for the overall operating performance within our thin film coating department. This individual plays a critical role within the organization as you will effectively manage labor resources, materials and utilization of equipment to meet/exceed production goals and objectives in accordance with RPO Business Objectives. As a member of the operations management team, this role will collaborate with multiple internal departments to coordinate technical resources (engineers, technicians, scientists, production personnel) to efficiently scale up new products targeted for manufacturing. This individual will also be responsible for recruiting, developing, and retaining production personnel within the department that support strategic initiatives, continuous improvement, and/or enable productivity gains. You Will:
- Manage all aspects of workload for the thin film coating department, this includes but is not limited to resources, tools, equipment, supplies and employees to meet or exceed schedule requirements.
- Have a full understanding of the overall capabilities of the department's equipment, staffing, and product flow through other departments. This includes, but is not limited to, identifying material or consumable needs required to deliver jobs on schedule and work closely with Purchasing and Planning to meet required needs.
- Lead the thin film coating area in meeting or exceeding schedule requirements, driven by other support groups. Identify any schedule risks and clearly communicate them to the Senior operations Manager, providing details on risks for equipment and staffing resources, with potential solutions.
- Review and approve Department personnel timesheets and time-off requests by required deadlines, adjust where necessary. Work with Senior Operations Manager to set, monitor approved OT.
- Provide daily and weekly feedback to thin film coating team and Senior Operations Manager both written and verbal. Maintain regular communication by providing team status, concerns or achievements both verbally and through status boards, IOI's or reports at the established frequency.
- Actively participate in week-to-week and month-to-month scheduling, working closely with Planning. Clearly communicate requirements to your staff.
- Follow and lead staff in complying with all company safety precautions, policies and procedures.
- Ensure that data entry occurs daily at a minimum, and that all required information is accurately entered by the staff in your area of responsibility. Work with thin film coating team to resolve issues with current jobs, coordinate support where required. Clearly communicate issues and current solutions to senior operations manager.
- Work with QA to define quality requirements, provide direction and support for your team in meeting quality requirements. Regularly monitor and guide team on meeting quality requirements.
- Establish training leads working closely with operators and technicians. Regularly maintain and review any training logs. Ensure all new staff have an established training plan for their job requirements.
- Mentor/develop leads, supervisors, and employees of the thin film coating department to fit the growing needs of the business. Maintain written documentation on success and issues with employees including employee reviews.
- Work with ME, QE, R&D staff and senior operations manager to develop and maintain new/existing processes, track, and drive quick completion of any documentation efforts. Guide and monitor any required retraining.
- Manage department production capacity and layout, evaluate staffing levels and coordinate adjustments hiring or transfers with Senior Operations Manager accordingly. Research new equipment and technologies with an eye towards quality improvement and cost reduction.
- Lead lean culture and continuous improvement in your area through space and process rearrangements, building moves or new equipment integration.
- Provide clear and prompt feedback to R&D/Engineering/ Business Development on quotes for new and recurring jobs, detailing all needs and requirements.
- Interact with R&D/Engineering to provide feedback and recommendations. Review prints and clearly communicate challenges and opportunities for improvement.
- Lead, as the technical resource, projects from ideation through commercialization when required based on workload and areas of expertise.
- Work with Sales Managers to attract potential customers and strategically select customers and jobs which are a good fit with RPO capabilities and/or strategic plans and that deliver a return to our investors.
You have:
- BS Degree (MS preferred) in optics, materials science, physics, engineering or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in a fast-paced production environment related to the department or equivalent work experience
- Leadership qualities and a minimum of 7 years' experience leading others or equivalent experience including lean manufacturing methodology and its implementation
- Thin film coating or optics background with proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints or drawings for both mechanical and optical standards.
- Solid knowledge of all aspects, concepts and equipment related to the department and the required disciplines.
- Capability of developing and understanding capacity modeling from available data
- Ability to follow detailed instructions, and properly manage available time
- Proficiency with Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Epicor or equivalent MRP/ERP
- Excellent problem solving and communication skills both written and verbal
- Good mental dexterity, decision making, analytical troubleshooting, and problem solving
- Ability to work in a challenging, fast-paced and high-stress environment

- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. May involve prolonged periods of magnified inspection (eye strain)
- Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.
- The employee is frequently required to use the computer.
- May involve the use of oils and solvents.
- Subject to some soilage and irritation from cleaning solutions. (Lab Coats provided)
- Generally works in a clean environment and works to maintain the environment as such.
- Safety Glasses are required and May require area specific safety training
- This position works in a manufacturing environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
- The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne paper particles. May work at different workstations as production needs require, or shifts from one station to another, during the production process.
