Position Highlights

We are seeking a highly experienced Associate Director for Business and Administration (AD) to join the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC). The UACC is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Cancer Center headquartered in the State of Arizona. Reporting directly to the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) Director, the Associate Director for Business and Administration is a key member of the leadership team which is responsible for the establishment and execution of programmatic research priorities which enable the Cancer Center to fulfill its mission and vision. The AD is the principal administrative officer of Cancer Center's research enterprise and will provide administrative oversight and drive future strategy for enhancing and expanding cancer research across all Colleges/Schools within the University of Arizona.

The Associate Director (AD) plays a key role in the development, implementation, and programmatic evaluation of the Center's research efforts, crucial for maintaining its National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation every five years. Responsibilities of this high-level executive position include elevating clinical and research dimensions of the Center, administrative accountability for the Center's assigned space, investments, budget, and information systems associated with the Center's research operations.

Duties & Responsibilities

OrganizationalStrategy:
  • Works with the Center Director, leaders, and stakeholders to develop andexecute the Center's mission-driven research strategy with priority beingplaced on maintaining NCI designation and comprehensive cancer center status,while evaluating progress.
  • Assist the Director in activities related to the leadership, planning, andevaluation efforts, including managing the Center's Executive Committee,External Advisory Board, Community Advisory Board, and the philanthropicAdvisory Board, as well as monitoring and implementing their recommendations toenhance program quality.
  • Assists the Center Director with faculty and staff recruitment as directed; acclimatesnew faculty and staff with UAHS and the Center.
  • Oversees internal and external communications strategy to develop positive andinformative messaging for UACC, including traditional news media, social media,UACC website, and the development of written and digital collateral.
  • Coordinates activities with partner institutions and represents the interest ofUACC in national, state, local, or inter-institutional committees.
  • Works to ensure collaboration with all University Colleges as well as withUniversity Hospital and clinical operations for seamless integration ofresearch efforts in the clinics.
  • Works with all University Colleges, University Hospital, and UACC leadership indeveloping processes to accelerate the translation of laboratory and populationscience discoveries into the clinic. Advocates for cancer investigators' needswithin institutional leadership committees.
  • Develops and implements short- and long-term plans to improve researchadministration and planning support provided to Center Leaders, ProgramLeaders, and cancer investigators. Sets policies for the provision of researchadministration and planning support activities to advance the goals of UACC.
  • Developsand oversees a staffing strategy, including evaluating hiring, performance,orientation, assignments, and training and development. Directs researchadministration office personnel.
  • Works with Senior Leaders, Program Leaders, and members to help define and clarifythe goals for the research programs, including cancer burden of the catchmentarea are addressed through research, community outreach and engagement, andeducation and training initiatives. Meets with CCSG component leads and/orprogram leaders regularly to assist in program development and planning, needsassessment, and progress review.
  • LeadsCenter-wide initiatives and programmatic activities (i.e., Research Retreats,Seminars, Program meetings). Manages the Center's membership Program andfosters effective member communication and engagement.
  • Assists Senior Leaders and Program Leaders to ensure that cancer researcheducational and training activities are aligned with the research goals of theCenter.
  • Promotes the development of cancer research education and training activitiesincluding faculty development. Supports the development of training grants.

Fiscal Management:
  • Oversee all financial resources of the UACC and is ultimatelyresponsible for fiscal results. This position supervises a financial team thatprepares and administers the Cancer Center's budget from all sources, includingregular reporting, analytics, and assessment of risk.
  • Budgets, tracks, and reports revenue and expenses associated with academic,research, development, and service center/core facility endeavors. Identifiesbudget variances and initiates corrective action in a timely manner.
  • Gathers information and input for the preparation and management ofoperating and capital budgets. Coordinates, manages, and approves procurement.
  • Assists the Director with budget preparation and administration,ensuring the financial sustainability of the Center's research operations. Inaddition, oversees and supervises the fiscal management of the Center.

Grants/Contracts Management:
  • Provides expertise and assistance in developing successful large-scale grant submissions that are critical to the mission of the Center (P01s, SPORES, T32, U54, etc.).
  • Directly monitors and maintains compliance for pre- and post-award of grants, contracts, and outgoing subcontracts under the direct responsibility of the UACC.

Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG):
  • Executive administrator responsible for the oversight and management of the Center's Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG).
  • Develops effective and efficient process and systems to collect data for monitoring progress of the research programs and all other CCSG components through metrics, including membership, funding base, publications, shared resource usage, clinical trials accruals, impact to catchment area populations, and other research program, scientific progress and performance, education and training, and other key metrics. AD is accountable for the quality of the CCSG application, including accuracy, consistency, and integrity.
  • Manages the CCSG proposal development, site visit planning, EAB visits, leadership retreats and other related activities required for NCI designation.
  • Monitors, evaluates, and reports onall P30 CCSG outcomes, progress, and organizational changes within the Center;Ensures appropriate and timely communication with the NCI.
  • Acts as the key administrativeliaison with NCI and other NCI designated centers.
  • Provides guidance to leadership andstaff on NCI CCSG guidelines and assures adherence to guidelines.
  • Oversees processes for solicitation,review, award, and monitoring of pilot projects.

Administration:
  • Accountable for ensuring excellence and compliance in areas of fiscal management, grants/contracts management, public relations/communications, philanthropy, information technology, and facility management.
  • Assists the Director with all operations including the creation andimplementation of Center-wide policies, processes, and initiatives; worksclosely with the Director to resolve any issues as they pertain to the Center.
  • Provides administrative oversight of CCSG-supported Shared Resources, Educationand Training activities, and Community Outreach and Engagement activities.

Technology and Facilities Management:
  • Participates in the ongoing supportand implementation of advanced technology to support comprehensive informationsystems for the Center. These systems are used to support both research andclinical research of the Center.
  • Oversees the management of space planning, allocation, buildingoperations, core facilities, information technology, and capital assetmanagement.

Philanthropy/Development:
  • Assists in planning and supporting fundraising, community outreach,government relations, and public relations efforts.
  • Supports the development team by working with the Development Directorand UACC Director as needed to develop new proposals and presentations tosolicit interests/funding for strategic efforts within the Center.
  • Helps ensure that philanthropy funds are utilized in the intent theywere given.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 11 years of related work experience, including 7 years of managerial experience, preferably in large complex institutions or organizations, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Requires experience in leading multiple teams, projects, programs, and/or functions.


Preferred Qualifications
  • MBA/MPH/MHA or PhD.
  • Experience with CCSG tables and NIH Assist.
  • Experience developing individual, institutional, and large-scale multi-project cancer research proposals (NIH and other peer-reviewed agencies or equivalent).
  • Oncology-related research experience and/or experience with the P30 Cancer Center Support Grant.
