Position Overview: As a Senior Staff Optical Manufacturing Engineer, you will play a crucial role in the design, development, and optimization of manufacturing processes for optical components and systems. Leveraging your expertise in engineering and manufacturing techniques, you will lead initiatives to improve production efficiency, quality control, and cost-effectiveness. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including R&D, production, and quality assurance to ensure the successful transfer of new optical products from prototype to mass production.

Leveraging your expertise in engineering and manufacturing techniques, you will lead initiatives to improve production efficiency, quality control, and cost-effectiveness. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including R&D, production, and quality assurance to ensure the successful transfer of new optical products from prototype to mass production.
Key Responsibilities:
- Working with other engineering team members, develop, optimize, and standardize manufacturing processes for optical components such as lenses and mirrors.
- Working with other engineering team members, develop, optimize, and standardize manufacturing processes for optical assemblies and sub-assemblies such as reflective and refractive telescopes.
- Understands full breadth of specifications used to characterize optical surfaces, sub-assemblies, and systems.
- Participate in and lead internal stage gate reviews such as Manufacturing Design Requirements and Manufacturing Readiness Reviews
- Lead the design and implementation of fixtures, tooling, and equipment to support optical manufacturing and assembly operations.
- Evaluates manufacturability of optical designs and provides feedback to the internal design team.
- Reviews customer requirements to propose and implement design-based solutions to meet specific application needs.
- Conduct feasibility studies and process validations to assess the manufacturability of new optical designs.
- Implement statistical process control (SPC) techniques to monitor and improve manufacturing quality and yield.
- Collaborate with R&D engineers to transfer new optical designs into production, ensuring seamless scale-up and efficient production ramp-up.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and production staff.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance manufacturing efficiency, reduce costs, and increase product quality.
- Partner with quality assurance teams to develop and implement robust inspection and testing protocols for optical components and systems.
- Troubleshoot manufacturing issues and implement corrective actions to resolve root causes and prevent recurrence.
- Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies in optical manufacturing, contributing insights to inform product development and manufacturing strategies.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 9 years of experience in optical manufacturing, with a strong understanding of optical design principles and manufacturing processes.
- Basic knowledge of optical fabrication technique for spheres, aspheres, and diamond turned optics.
- Hands-on experience with optical metrology tools and fabrication techniques.
- Demonstrated expertise in process optimization, statistical analysis, and quality management methodologies.
- Proven track record of successfully leading projects and cross-functional teams.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues at all levels of the organization.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive, results-oriented mindset.
- Experience with Solidworks in the design of manufacturing tooling preferred.
- Experience with AS9100, ISO 9001 or other quality management systems is a plus.
