The Flight Specialist Respiratory Therapist acts as the expert resource in both invasive and non-invasive ventilator management, high oxygen needs and other medically complex patients on select interfacility transports.

Posting Specifics:
  • Hours full time 36 hours


Essential Functions
  • Demonstrates autonomous mastery of running and troubleshooting transport ventilators and oxygen systems (transport ventilator, aero-orb, high flow nasal cannula, inhaled vasodilators, and specialty gases).
  • Demonstrates resourcefulness, adaptability, and expert knowledge.
  • Uses physical assessment skills to identify baseline and changes.
  • Identifies potential problems for individual patients, uses continuous assessment skills to identify the deteriorating patient.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity in communicating with referral health care personnel and families in obtaining patient information, performing patient stabilization measures, and assuming patient care responsibilities/ works collaboratively with Flight Nurses, Flight Paramedics and the Control Physician to manage the care of the patients during transport.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current state license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in hiring state.
  • Graduate of a NBRC approved Respiratory Therapist program. Education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Degree will be verified.
  • Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers.
  • Specific certifications as required (i.e. PALS, ACLS, NRP).
  • Three years' experience post-graduation (CAMT's requirement).
  • One-year critical care experience at hiring facility.
  • Works in critical care/emergency room as assigned by the home department of Respiratory Therapy.
  • Meets the requirements of the RRT job description in assigned Respiratory Therapy department.
  • Responsible for redeployment shifts per month in 12-24-hour blocks. Shares in covering fair number of holidays, weekends, and nights.
  • If the RRT is considered the second team member on transport they are required to obtain one of the following certifications/credentials within 2 years of hire. Credentials as appropriate for the for the patient population transported ACCS for adult teams and either NPS or C-NPT for pediatric/neonatal teams. If the RRT is the third team member these are strongly encouraged but not required.
  • Additional state licensure will be determined by flight leadership to be obtained within 6 months of hire.

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
  • For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.
$34.06 - $52.55
