Base Compensation Range: $70,000 - $100,000

*In addition, you qualify for:

This position supports our Protein Technologies business. Gyros Protein Technologies provides automated systems for protein analysis and peptide synthesis solutions that accelerate the discovery, development, and manufacture of biotherapeutic drugs.

Job Summary

The Mechanical Engineer will participate in the development of automated peptide synthesis systems from concept phases all the way through to production and field support. You will be challenged to flex your design skills from developing novel, cost effective solutions to more intricate designs with high demands for quality and precision.

In the role as Mechanical Engineer, you will be involved in the entire development process, from idea generation and early proof of concept to development, verification, launch and sustainment of all product lines.

The work is conducted in project form as part of an interdisciplinary team and includes collaboration with other functions (such as manufacturing, quality control, operations, application science, and other R&D functions) demanding good communication and collaboration skills.

Duties/Responsibilities
Participate in the specification and development of new instruments and modules with focus on manufacturability and functionality
Create and maintain mechanical drawings, specifications and necessary documentation
Assist in component review in case of end-of-life components or cost down initiatives
Troubleshoot manufacturing or functional issues to determine root cause and suggest/implement preventative measures.
Work closely with other R&D functions to ensure individual designs meet overall project objectives
Analyze new functionality and suggest implementation strategies and time plans.
Suggest improvements to both the functionality and cost of the instrument.
Prepare technical reports or presentations and participate in design reviews.
Participate in the development of project documentation such as test results, time plans, requirements, verification and validation documentation
Plan, perform, and record verification and validation of instruments and modules
Establish and develop processes, SOPs and product documentation for manufacturing and Service
Ensure product quality support of existing products

Experience/Education
Bachelor or Master of Science in Mechanical engineering, Engineering Physics or another relevant field
1 to 5 years of industry related, hands-on design experience preferably in the Life Science area.
Proven track record of developing production instruments or relevant alternative
Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training

Experience - Required
Strong mechanical component/assembly design and development skills
Experience with CAD, preferably Solidworks
Experience utilizing and maintaining a PDM system
Previous experience designing and working with a variety of mechanical systems
Experience with a variety of manufacturing, inspection, and quality control techniques
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills are a must.
Ability to work independently and take on a large degree of responsibility and commitment to the task
Team-oriented and effective verbal and written communication skills.
Valid US work permit

Experience - Bonus
Skills in electronics, including but not limited to embedded microcontrollers, sensors, temperature and motion control systems
Experience in a fabrication facility, including with CNC machine tool programming and operation
General familiarity with organic/peptide chemistry concepts

Environmental Conditions

This role will be predominantly on-site at our Tucson, AZ office location. The site is a mixed-use space that includes offices, a machine shop, manufacturing floor, chemistry labs and shipping/receiving space. Normal responsibilities of this role will include operating comfortably within all these spaces at different times. Physical demands of this role include occasionally lifting or moving objects up to 50 lbs. and working safely around potentially hazardous materials. Occasional travel both within the US and internationally may be required.
