Job Description

Assessment of patients for appropriate IV access (peripheral line, midline or PICC line) during the course of hospitalization.
  • Physician's order and consult to the PICC team is required.
  • Vascular access nurse assess indication and or contraindication/limitations of PICC lines, e.g. surgery-Fistula- History of Central Thrombosis- Bacteremia or implants.
  • Inserts PICCs under ultrasound guidance and/or TIP locating system to determine appropriate placement.
  • Informs the staff post-PICC placement (SBAR) and to notify physician to order chest x-ray.
  • Follow-up results of chest x-ray.
  • Ensure that orders are written to use and care/maintenance of PICC line.
  • Troubleshooting - consults for clotted PICC

- leakage or issues regarding PICC lines.
3. For Peripheral IV access:

a. Inserts PIV on patients after multiple failed attempts by the staff nurses.

b. Using ultrasound guidance for patients with poor IV access.

c. Training of new nurses in acquiring skills for IV insertion and phlebotomy.

d. Participates in the hospital-wide PI program in coordination with Infection Control

Department.

Collaborates with Medical Team and Nursing staff regarding line placement.
Validates new RNs on dressing changes when needed.

Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. One (1) year of experience as a registered nurse.
