Department Overview

The Department of Rehabilitation Services at OHSU is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary program dedicated to delivering high-quality rehabilitation care across all phases of recovery for both adult and pediatric patient populations. Our rehab services are provided to patients in acute care, the emergency department, intensive care units and the NICU; and in outpatient multidisciplinary and rehab clinics. As an integral part of an academic medical center, Rehab Services is committed to supporting the institution's clinical, research, and educational missions. We provide state-of-the-art rehabilitation interventions that enhance patient outcomes, advance scientific knowledge, and educate the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Directs all aspects of management and ensures the provision of quality patient/family centered care for assigned service lines or areas; provides leadership development, implementation and evaluation of policies. procedures, strategies and services for assigned service lines; assures interdisciplinary collaboration among staff and leadership to optimize care and work environment; works with physician and administrative partners and other disciplines to maximize interdisciplinary care, sets priorities in accordance with overall institutional goals and departmental objectives, represents Rehabilitation Services and OHSU on projects and program leadership. Additionally, the Rehabilitation Director will oversee strategic planning for rehab-related programs within OHSU Health System to ensure system-wide strategy and vision. The position also includes a .1 FTE faculty appointment including coordination for OHSU based faculty and direct teaching in the OHSU/OIT DPT Program. See associated PD for that role.

Function/Duties of Position

Leadership:
  • Demonstrates leadership practices that influence others to achieve the mission, vision, goals, and objectives of OHSU.
  • Participates in the structuring of organized rehabilitation services by developing and implementing models of care, determining skills needed, and creating job expectations.
  • Ensures staffing needs of the department are met. Develops managers to project needs, interview, hire and resolve staffing issues to assure that the workload is handled effectively.
  • Work with OHSU Health System Partners to oversee strategic vision in relationship to rehabilitation programs across the health system
  • Collaborate with other OHSU Affiliates and health systems on an as needed basis to grow and support Rehabilitation services throughout the health system and our market areas.

Quality Care:
  • Analyzes and evaluates Rehabilitation services practice, research, and trends; applies knowledge to ensuring optimal patient outcomes and fiscal viability.
  • Coordinates Rehabilitation care practices and models by using selected management practice theory as a framework for coordinating patient care and by providing theory based practice learning in unusual or complex patient-care situations.
  • Utilizes research findings and supports clinical research within the service line and department so that clinical, educational, and organizational performance is improved.
  • Maximizes patient movement through the system in collaboration with Care Management and other disciplines.
  • Assures service line compliance with OHSU policies, AFSCME contracts, and regulatory rules and regulations.
  • Assure age specific development of managers and staff in working with patients and colleagues.
  • Promotes patient satisfaction as a priority within Rehabilitation Services.
  • Develops programs for continuous improvement of patient and staff satisfaction.

Finance and Budget:
  • Develops, prepares, submits program budget in collaboration with other service line/clinical integration partners and program directors. Develops accountability model for managers and assures compliance with assigned budget allocation.
  • Directs the allocation of resources within selected areas through planning, budget process, analysis of statistical reports and other pertinent information to ensure cost effective, efficient, productive competitive operations while maintaining the delivery of high value care to patients.

Quality and Performance Improvement:
  • Participates, leads and coordinates continuous quality improvement which enhances clinical practice, the administrative process, and development of staff so that value added services are provided.
  • Works with assigned managers and staff to develop and support the Rehabilitation Practice Committees to optimize care, work life and communication within the unit and throughout the organization.
  • Assures communication to and from administration and other disciplines to rehabilitation services. Partners with physicians and other disciplines in the achievement of patient care goals.


Required Qualifications

Education:
  • Master's Degree in Rehabilitation Field
  • Valid national licensure and certification in Physical, Occupational Therapy or Speech Language Pathology

Experience:
  • Must have 5+ years Rehabilitation Leadership Experience

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):
  • Previous experience managing multiple units, preference for specialty background.
  • Related specialty experience.
  • Strong communication skills, teamwork (demonstrated ability to build team and integrate existing teams), and experience in complex organizational environments.
  • Ability to integrate units and managers not typically working together.


Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 years in rehab management positions.


Additional Details

  • Office work schedule associated with leadership in a clinical setting; i.e. may require long hours to achieve timely completion of work products.
  • Occasional business travel for operations or education reasons.
  • Subject to computer work for several hours, as needed.
  • May be expected to utilize all patient care equipment and office equipment within work area.
