SALARY: Salary range: $178,763 - $183,763

TITLE: Elementary School Principal

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. As set by Connecticut State Department of Education, Bureau of Certification.
2. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the local Board of Education might find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools

SUPERVISES: All personnel serving in assigned school

JOB GOAL: By use of leadership, supervisory and administrative skills, to manage assigned school so as to promote the educational development of each student.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assumes leadership in the development and implementation of curriculum, instruction, and programs to meet students' academic and social-developmental learning needs.
  • Cultivates a positive, collaborative school culture conducive to the needs of elementary grade students by leading a school climate committee to develop positive school wide policies, rituals, and routines.
  • Possesses the interpersonal skills necessary to foster positive relationships with parents, guardians, students, and staff members, and administrative colleagues.
  • Works collaboratively with building-based and Central Office leaders to develop school and district practices reflective of the District Vision and Core Beliefs.
  • Examines student performance data and collaboratively develops action plans to address necessary improvements for students to meet or exceed benchmark learning goals.
  • Develops the individual and collective instructional capacity of all teaching faculty and supports such practice through supervision, evaluation, and professional learning.
  • Develops and monitors the professional learning communities within the school to ensure they function in a collaborative manner focused on the improvement of teaching practice
  • Supports the district-wide goal to assure highly effective teachers in every classroom as defined by Simsbury Public Schools Teaching Standards.
  • Conducts faculty meetings with a teaching and learning focus to address school goals and that also inform faculty of policy changes and new programs/initiatives.
  • Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary, according to the due process rights of the students.
  • Implements Board policies and administrative rules and regulations relating to the school.
  • Directs the activities of school professional and non-professional staff members in the performance of their duties.
  • Assumes responsibility for evaluating or supervising the evaluation of all personnel and recommending the assignment or dismissal of personnel.
  • Assists in the recruiting, screening, training, hiring, and assigning of school faculty and staff.
  • Orients newly assigned staff members and oversees their professional learning.
  • Cooperates with college and university officials regarding teacher training and preparation.
  • Examines and assesses the needs of stakeholders (parents, faculty, students) and develops plans for meeting these needs.
  • Conducts continuous evaluation of all school programs.
  • Reports to appropriate central office administrative officers regarding the needs of the school with respect to personnel, equipment, supplies, curriculum and instruction
  • Prepares and delivers reports as may be required.
  • Works collaboratively with Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), community volunteers, Town Social Services Department, and other local organizations.
  • Develops a program of public relations in order to further the community's understanding and support of the education program.
  • Understands and advocates for resources/structures that support best educational practices.
  • Understands and makes appropriate decisions regarding resource allocation for effective program development for students identified with special needs.
  • Develops and presents the school's operating budget and administers the budgeted allocations.
  • Advocates the increased access to reliable current and proven education technologies to expand learning and productivity for students.
  • Exercises decisive leadership in crisis situations.
  • Assumes responsibility for personal professional development and growth.
  • Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the Superintendent may assign.

  • TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    1. Twelve-month year
    2. Salary and work year to be established through negotiations between the Board of Education and the Simsbury School Administrators and Supervisors Association.

    EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Administrative Personnel.
