Job Description
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The supervisor of nurses will improve patient safety and quality of care by providing oversight to nurses and provide education on risk management and safety concerns. Provides valuable teaching and learning experiences to newly hired nursing staff. Serves as a role model to promote safe patient care using evidence-based practice. Provides direct continuous supervision to limited permit nurses working on assigned units.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Preceptor/Education Duties:
1. Uses evidence-based practices to guide newly hired RNs, limited permit nurses and LPNs on facility nursing protocols. Provides feedback and ongoing education to ensure staff successfully acclimate and succeed in their role .
2. Provide ongoing hand over hand coaching to new nursing hires to ensure that they continue with the learning necessary to provide safe patient care and adherence to regulatory guidelines and facility policies.
3. Provide continued coaching and support to recently hired nursing staff within assigned units to Fundamental in the retention of staff by working closely with all new staff to foster and motivate succession
4. Provides direct supervision to limited permit nurses assigned to unit, and actively mentors and supports their growth in the professional and clinical practice.
5. Foster's growth and development to nursing staff in a supportive environment where the new nurse will feel comfortable asking any and all questions.
6. In conjunction with nurse educator, develops, plans and assists in the preparation, implementation and evaluation of training and educational activities for nursing staff
7. Identifies factors that affect nursing staff's ability to effectively fulfill their job responsibilities, and makes recommendations to Nursing leadership with the goal of process improvement.
General Clinical Supervision Duties:
1. Participates in the determination of conditions, resources and policies essential to delivery of nursing care within the clinical service.
2. Participate in Fall Prevention initiatives to reduce the rate of falls and fall associated injuries.
3. Lead Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement projects aimed at reducing the rate of falls.
4. Conduct chart audits for high risk residents and ensure plan of care is personalized and documented in resident medical records.
5. Guides, coordinates and directs the development and maintenance of a system of evaluation of nursing care, practices and procedures, including evaluation of nursing personnel within the clinical service.
6. Defines, implements and maintains standards of nursing practice and evaluates the quality of nursing care rendered within the clinical service.
7. Reviews and analyzes trends pertinent to delivery of nursing care services within the clinical service
and initiates appropriate innovations or makes recommendations for needed changes in support of
patient experience and continuity of care.
8. Serves as a resource person to unit staff and assumes responsibility for the management of one or more
units as designated on assigned tours.
9. Provide direct care to patients in all clinical areas as needed.
10. Performs other professional nursing activities as delegated by nursing service administration.
11. Performs major duties and functions as described in the Staff Nurse position description.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional
Nurse in New York State; and a. A Bachelor's of Science degree in Nursing or higher (or other nursing degree, as identified by NYS Education Department including Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Science) from an accredited college or university, registered with the
NYSED; or b. Obtains a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Nursing or higher, as described in "a"
above, within ten (10) years of the date of initial licensure; and 2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in
Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and 3. Three (3) years of experience as a registered nurse
DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES (Functional Job Description Requirements) 1. Previous experience actin in a nurse preceptor role
2. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to foster positive professional working relationships
3. Ability to serve as a role model, provide leadership and demonstrate professionalism.
