Job Description

Purpose:
Under the supervision of the O.R. Director or designee, assists with the assessment, organization, management and coordination of direct and indirect patient care services to attain optimum and effective patient care.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Attends designated administrative/management meeting; assumes responsibility for the interpretation and support for hospital/nursing objectives and policies; communicates information back to staff on a monthly basis.
Continually evaluates personnel in conjunction with the supervisor through use of anecdotal records, counseling reports and annual written performance evaluations.
Accepts and assumes responsibility to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and direct nursing care in specific area of the O.R.; maintains knowledge of AORN recommended practice and current policies/procedures within the hospital and O.R.; maintains safe and therapeutic nursing practices.
Assess learning needs of staff, teaches staff appropriate theoretical/technical principals based on the nursing process; participates in the orientation of new O.R. personnel, responsible for new personnel orientation and training.
Plans and provides direct care to assigned patients; provides psychological and emotional support as necessary; works with other personnel in a unified team effort. In the absence of the O.R. supervisor, supervises the O.R staff and coordinates the O.R schedule.
Recognize emergency situations and function effectively; maintain safety in the patient's environment; utilize and reinforce standard precautions.
Participates in review and evaluation of current nursing practices and recommends change; participates in hospital/nursing research activities. Updates and revises the O.R Manuel based on AORN recommended practice.
Acts as a resource person within the unit/hospital; assists with organization of unit educational conferences to maintain/improve nursing care and ensure continuity of patient care; meets with staff members for the purpose of communication and improving nursing care in the O.R. conducts and schedules weekly in-services with staff. Maintains all sign-in sheets up to date.
Develops and ensures that individual patient teaching is implemented; consults with patients, families, significant others, staff and physicians for the needs of the patient.
Maintain professional competence through participation in continuing education; attendance at annual mandatory classes; maintain BLS and current AORN, CDC and AAMI recommended practices.
Participates in the Joint Commission and infection control activities. Maintains performance improvement activities on a monthly basis.
Provides age appropriate care to newborn, infant, toddler, preschoolers, school-age adolescent, young adult, middle age and geriatric patients.
Maintains all manuals up to date.

Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. One (1) year of experience as a registered nurse.
