The Controller is a key member of the Finance leadership team, responsible for overseeing the organization's accounting operations, ensuring the integrity of financial information, and maintaining compliance with federal, state, and non-profit accounting standards. This position plays a vital role in managing budgets, audits, financial reporting, internal controls, and grant compliance to support the organization's mission of delivering high-quality behavioral health services.

Who We Need
The Controller is a key member of the Finance leadership team, responsible for overseeing the organization's accounting operations, ensuring the integrity of financial information, and maintaining compliance with federal, state, and non-profit accounting standards. This position plays a vital role in managing budgets, audits, financial reporting, internal controls, and grant compliance to support the organization's mission of delivering high-quality behavioral health services.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. CPA preferred.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Experience in a non-profit and/or healthcare setting is strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and federal grant compliance.
- Proficiency in financial management systems; experience with accounting software (e.g., GreatPlains, Kronos) a plus.
Job Summary (Including, but not limited to)
Financial Expertise & Compliance
- Demonstrates deep knowledge of GAAP, non-profit accounting principles, Section 42 (LIHTC) and federal grant compliance.
- Ensures accuracy in all financial statements, reports, and audit materials.
- Maintains current knowledge of regulatory changes affecting behavioral health, real estate development, affordable housing and non-profit finance.
Strategic Financial Management
- Collaborates with the CFO to support long-term financial planning, forecasting, and budgeting.
- Analyzes financial trends and variances to inform leadership decision-making.
- Proactively manages cash flow and resource allocation to support programmatic and organizational goals.
Internal Controls & Risk Management
- Designs and maintains internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure compliance.
- Identifies financial risks and implements strategies to mitigate them.
- Leads efforts to continuously improve financial processes and systems.
Leadership & Talent Development
- Recruits, hires, and retains high-performing accounting staff.
- Sets clear performance expectations, provides regular feedback, and conducts performance evaluations aligned with organizational values.
- Develops team capabilities through coaching, training, and growth opportunities.
Operational Excellence
- Oversees day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring timely processing of payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and financial transactions.
- Implements and monitors best practices for efficiency, accuracy, and customer service within the Finance team.
Audit & Grant Oversight
- Leads and manages the preparation for annual audits, including coordination with external auditors.
- Ensures proper financial documentation and reporting for all government and private grants.
- Supports timely and accurate filing of required reports such as IRS Form 990 and AHCCCS cost reports.
Collaboration & Communication
- Builds strong partnerships across departments to support financial literacy and budget ownership.
- Communicates complex financial information clearly to both finance and non-finance audiences.
- Serves as a financial liaison to internal stakeholders, funders, and regulatory agencies.
- Adherence to all agency policies, licensure, and training requirements.
- To ensure compliance & adequate services, additional job duties may be required to meet the needs of the program and or department.
