Sr Principal Scientist Claims and Nutrition North America, Scientific and Regulatory

As an associate of Scientific & Regulatory Affairs (SRA), the Senior Principal Scientist SRA provides regulatory, scientific and nutrition expertise and leverages SRA network to enable the development and execution of Mars Wrigley (MW) claims and nutrition-related regulatory affairs and scientific affairs strategy for North America.

This position leads the development and execution of claims initiatives, nutrition, nutrition-related regulatory affairs and scientific affairs and related issues management critical to MW. This position creates and coordinates aligned scientific messaging, and represents/leads MW in key external organizations, to create a scientifically based regulatory environment.

This role creates and sustains a competitive advantage for MW and manages our Freedom to Operate agenda to support the achievement of Mars' overall business goals by leading the external influencing and internal strategy and execution related to MW SRA North America.

What are we looking for?
  • Master's in nutrition or related science. Phd preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with a food company working with nutrition research, trade associations or government agencies to clarify and resolve regulatory and scientific matters.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge: of food regulatory and human health issues; track record of working successfully across functions to achieve shared goals; and proven ability to interact cross-functionally at all levels within the organization are required.
  • Preferred 8+ years' experience in scientific affairs / nutrition with food products and/or related product categories (such as food supplements, cosmetics) with proficiency in food law and nutrition policy for North America.


What will be your key responsibilities?

CLAIMS
  • Directs MW North America's claims review, substantiation and approval and provides support for product innovation projects and product marketing initiatives. Serves as a key resource to North America SRA associates to ensure timely support for claims projects.
  • Co-creates with Marketing and R&D team on new concept, claims and communication based on desired consumer benefit through scientific expertise and understanding of the regulatory environment in North America
  • Proactively identifies opportunity to enable innovation (e.g., claims) and consumer obsession through the health, nutrition and claims lens
  • Provides guidance on roadmap to generate required scientific substantiation, gain regulatory approval or mitigate the risk of nutrition or functional claims by working cross-functionally within MW, with consultants and/or external inter-industry groups.
  • Governs claims approval process to ensure compliance to MW and Mars global standards and polices related to health, nutrition and claims.


HORIZON SCANNING AND ISSUES MANAGEMENT
  • Proactively monitors scientific and regulatory activities in North America in the areas of claims, nutrition and health, and ensures regulatory changes are properly executed and reported
  • Translates external regulatory development into business impact to provide visibility to business stakeholders (e.g. Product Development, Science and Technology, Corporate Affairs), and drives proactive actions to protect our Freedom to Operate or unlock growth opportunities
  • Leads the management of nutrition-related issues for MW through clear mapping of external landscape, Mars Wrigley North America objective in the issue, develops action plan to protect the business through internal and external networks and escalate to appropriate business fora.


NUTRITION-RELATED SCIENTIFIC AFFAIRS AND REGULATORY AFFAIRS
  • Leads scientific affairs and regulatory affairs strategy on key internal and external nutrition-related issues impacting Mars Wrigley North America business to protect the business freedom to operate and unlock business growth
  • Owns relationship with external trade associations and professional groups in nutrition and health policy and shapes the agenda at these external groups
  • Partners cross-functionally with Public Affairs, R&D, Corporate Affairs, Legal and with other Mars segments to establish science policy and influence scientific opinions and positions, external scientific environment and key opinion leaders that benefit and further the company's innovation and growth strategies in North America.

The base pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between the range listed below, however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including but not limited to, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position mayalso include other elements, if eligible, including variable pay, medical and dental benefits, participation in 401k plan, and paid time off benefits. Eligibility for these additional elements depend on the position offered and the employee's work schedule (i.e., part-time schedule, store associate). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an applicant receives an offer of employment.
