District Five is one of six districts of the New Mexico Department of Transportation. The boundaries of District Five include the following counties: Torrance, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Taos, and San Juan. Employees in the District are responsible for providing the Maintenance, Construction, Engineering Support, and Business support measures of the Department to ensure the safety of the public as well as efficient highways.
This position is located within the District Five Complex in the Traffic Section.

Why does the job exist?
The position manages the District Traffic Section. This section is responsible for issuing access, utility, special event, landscaping permits. Review and approve Traffic Studies, Construction plans, conduct field reviews for safety. The position will also manage the District's striping, signing and guardrail programs and meet with the public regarding safety concerns.
How does it get done?
The Incumbent will manage the District Traffic Section with duties to include organize the staffing, work assignments, permitting, and equipment of the District's Traffic Section and ensure work is produced accurately and timely. Attend meetings and provide traffic engineering expertise for the District regarding safety, signage, and traffic control during construction. Provide support to the District Maintenance and Construction Sections. Promote safe and effective travel to state-maintained highways.

The traveling public, cities, counties, and other governmental agencies.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have the following experience:
- Supervision of employees,
- Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards,
- Dealing with the general public,
- Resolving concerns/issues in a timely manner,
- Excellent customer service skills, and
- Permit processing.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and eight (8) years of engineering experience, four (4) of which must be as a Licensed Professional Engineer and (2) years of experience in a supervisory/managerial role. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling twelve (12) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be certified by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical. Reference check and Driver's License verification are required and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting. Exposure to: Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), extensive personal computer and phone usage. Communication with the general public and public agencies on a frequent basis. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to meet multiple deadlines. Occasional statewide and out of state travel maybe required.
