What You'll Do
As a Transmission Planning Project Manager, you will oversee all phases of transmission planning projects, from business development to execution. You will manage multidisciplinary teams, develop scope and fee structures, ensure quality deliverables, and maintain strong client relationships. You'll also be a mentor and resource for growing talent within our team. Key responsibilities include:
Business Development
- Cultivate and grow client relationships through marketing efforts, project interactions, and strategic engagement.
- Identify and pursue new sales opportunities with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, and developers.
- Lead proposal development, project scoping, budgeting, and scheduling activities.
- Set critical project objectives with clients and lead contract development and negotiations.
Project Execution
- Manage the full lifecycle of transmission planning projects including scope, schedule, budget, quality, and client communication.
- Lead risk assessment processes and procedures using industry best practices.
- Direct and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams of engineers and analysts.
- Communicate project status, risks, and costs to stakeholders and executive leadership.
Leadership & Mentorship
- Train and mentor junior staff on both technical and project management aspects of transmission planning.
- Champion internal initiatives that promote team growth and technical excellence.
- Serve as a go-to technical expert in transmission system planning and evaluation.
Technical Responsibilities
- Perform and lead advanced transmission planning studies, including steady-state, transient stability, short circuit, voltage analysis, and production costing.
- Apply and interpret regulatory standards (NERC, FERC, and regional policies) to ensure compliant and forward-thinking planning.
- Utilize tools like PSSE, PSLF, PowerWorld, PSCAD, EMTP/ATP, ETAP, and Promod to perform complex power system modeling and analysis.
- Resolve technical challenges related to transmission planning and present clear, actionable solutions to project stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, electrical engineering preferred, or related field from an accredited curriculum.
- An advanced degree, such as an MBA, Master's in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Management, or PhD, is a plus.
- Minimum 5 years related experience with a broad range of transmission system studies, including 3 or more years managing engineering projects.
- A deep and broad base of knowledge regarding electric transmission systems and transmission system planning processes.
- Extensive experience with planning, studies, and operations such as transient stability, short circuit, and voltage analysis; NERC, FERC, and
- Regional requirements, policies, and procedures; production costing; risk assessment techniques; TPL compliance; generator interconnection; and harmonics analysis.
- Strong computer skills using industry software such as PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, and Promod.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage a transmission system planning study with execution support from other staff.
- Knowledge of numerous power regions of the country and independent system operators such as PJM, MISO, NEISO, SPP, CAISO, WECC, SERC, ERCOT, NYISO
- Knowledge of NERC and FERC standards.
- Demonstrated ability to provide independent evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of standard engineering techniques for electric transmission system planning procedures and criteria.
- Proven ability to lead, educate, and train a team of engineers and analysts regarding transmission system planning studies.
- Proven ability to lead multi-discipline teams of engineers and analysts.
- General business and financial calculation knowledge.
- Effective Project Management skills.
- Work with existing and new clients to identify new projects, articulate our ability to perform those projects to the clients, and translate that into the sale of consulting services.
- Communicate with various business contacts to understand their needs and translate them into a scope of work that meets their desired outcomes.
- Perform under pressure and tight deadlines and be effective in on-site work environments.
- Manage multiple projects concurrently, including identification of critical path items to ensure deliverable deadlines are met.
- Focus on the big picture to effectively and efficiently provide services that meet client needs while also being able to identify and analyze details that are critical to project outcomes.
- Willingness to learn new service offerings as client needs and the market require changes to the service offerings provided by our group.
- Willingness and ability to develop a broad set of service offering types to allow for flexibility to go where the work is.
- Willingness to cross-sell other services offered by Burns & McDonnell outside the project manager's core set of services.
- Willingness to negotiate with clients for new service agreements.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT).
- Must be able to deal effectively with various industry, government, and public contracts on project-related matters.
- Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Professional Registration is preferred.
