SDOT has three exciting opportunities for team-oriented and innovation-minded Associate Civil Engineers on our design teams within the Capital Projects Division. These team members will support SDOT's Engineering group who is pushing the edge of approaches for multi-modal, roadway and drainage design in municipal settings. These positions will work across the entire organization, as well as collaborating with staff from other departments within the City. Come help keep Seattle moving!

Job Responsibilities
- Serves as a Design Lead and may serve as a Project Engineer on capital improvement projects (CIPs).
- Employs a working knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of roadway and drainage engineering for public works projects.
- Employs a working knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures for arterial roadways, ADA compliance, pedestrian safety, and pavement design.
- Interprets and applies the City Stormwater Code and associated Director's Rules to transportation projects.
- Performs engineering analysis and design, cost estimating, drafting, mapping and computations, as well as reads and interprets plans, specification, and construction documents.
- Prepares engineering calculations and creates technical design documents.
- Researches existing conditions and performs technical field investigations and inspections as required to support projects through design and construction.
- Partners with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) in the implementation of both innovation and typical roadway drainage solutions.
- Employs a working knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures for bicycle, pedestrian and transit facility design.
- Interprets and applies the City's Right of Way Improvement Manual (Streets Illustrated) to transportation projects.
- Collaborates with planners, the community, and SDOT's executive leadership to shape innovative active transportation solutions.
- Coordinates the technical design efforts of a multi-discipline internal design teams to complete construction documents for capital improvement projects.
- Interprets and applies the Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) manuals, and City's Right of Way Improvement Manual (Streets Illustrated) to transportation projects.
- Supports department goals in promoting diversity and social justice.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology, or related field.
Experience:
- Three (3) years of professional civil engineering experience.
OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.
Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or are able to describe comparable experience:
- EIT (Engineer in Training) Certificate.
- Knowledge of National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) and AASHTO guidelines for design of active transportation facilities.
- Working level knowledge of Seattle of Seattle Codes and Director's Rules.
- Capability with performing design work using Autodesk AutoCAD and Civil3D software.
- Experience with Bluebeam, and Adobe PDF software.
- Proficiency in using MS Word, MS Excel, and SharePoint Online.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to speak another language other than English is a plus.
- Ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.
Other Requirements:
Work Environment / Physical Demands:
- Work is typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 3 days of the work is completed in a City office, and up to 2 days of the work can be completed remotely in a regular 40-hour work week.
- Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous substances, and on or near construction sites.
- May be required to lift over 50 pounds. May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
- May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays in all types of weather.
Licenses:
- Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
