TheBoston Athletic Association(B.A.A.)is a non-profit organization with a mission to promote a healthy lifestyle through sports, especially running. The B.A.A. is committed to a world where all people can access and benefit from running and an active lifestyle. The B.A.A. advances its mission and vision by organizing mass-participatory running events such as the Boston Marathon, creating or supporting community fitness events, and sponsoring a running club that serves the greater Boston area.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is an essential member of the Executive Team at the B.A.A., responsible for directing and overseeing the organizations financial operations. The CFO reports to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and partners with members of the Executive and Leadership Teams to implement strategies that drive operational and financial success. The CFO helps sustain and grow the B.A.A.s business model and impact, applying a strategic mindset to all they do, while managing a small team that is critical to the work of the organization.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as a member of the organizations Executive Team. Partner with the CEO and Executive Team members to develop and drive organizational strategies.
Lead the financial strategy and related results of the organization.
Serve as the primary financial leader, expert, and at times decisionmaker within the Executive Team, and in support of the CEO. Provide counsel to support the organizations operating efficiency, growth and overall strategy.
Maintain a close, effective working relationship with the B.A.A. Board of Governors, Board Chair, Treasurer, and Finance and Audit Committee Members. Serve as the staff lead for the Finance and Audit Committee and participate in Board meetings, as assigned.
Partner with leadership to produce an Annual Operating Plan and Budget; providing / overseeing monthly analysis of actual results, financial trends, and forecasts.
Enhance budget processes and practices appropriately over time.
Ensure the B.A.A.s Annual Budget meets targets. Find efficiencies and economies throughout the budget year as relevant.
Help optimize revenue streams for the B.A.A., by analyzing and assessing feasibility and alignment with organizational strategy.
Oversee effective financial processes and procedures to deliver on organizational priorities and increase the B.A.A.s financial strength while identifying and minimizing risk.
Provide / ensure timely, accurate and complete financial reporting and analysis.
Ensure the B.A.A. has the proper financial controls and reporting procedures to meet operational and financial targets.
Direct the preparation of all financial statements, including statements of financial position, statements of activities and changes in net assets, statement of cash flows; collaborate with external auditors and be responsive to external auditor requests and needs for information.
Direct the preparation of all required tax returns and filings; collaborate with tax service providers to ensure compliance.
Oversee compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies, including, but not limited to: Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, Form 990 and other Annual Reporting requirements.
Maintain continuous lines of communication with the CEO, keeping them well informed at all times. Serve as a representative of the B.A.A., and on behalf of the CEO, as appropriate.
Motivate, lead and direct the activities of a high-performance Finance team.
Serve as an advocate and leader for the B.A.A. as a whole.

Bachelors degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field; or equivalent experience/certifications considered.
oCPA, CFA and/or MBA a plus.
10 or more years of relevant work experience in a Chief Financial Officer, Financial Director, Controller, or comparable financial leadership position with proven success in financial management and strategic planning, including in the nonprofit industry.
oExperience in endurance sports / sports industry a plus.
Proven financial acumen and leadership, including in budgeting and forecasting.
Ability to establish and enforce proper financial and administrative controls.
Strategic planning skills.
Excellent planning and organizational skills.
Superb attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems, expertly navigate conflict, and effectively manage and respond to high-intensity situations.
Experience leading and coaching teams to success.
Confidence and proficiency in presenting information clearly and effectively to various audiences.
An orientation toward customer service and teamwork with the belief that the best work gets done through collaborative and inclusive environments.
Proficient in Microsoft 365 tools, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, as well as in financial software, especially Sage Intacct and QuickBooks.
oExperience with Salesforce beneficial.
Willingness to join employees when non-traditional hours may be required, including weekends and evenings, when race and other event needs arise.
WORK EXPECTATIONS AT B.A.A
We are a hands-on team andseek employees who are passionate about our work and service to our community. The Chief Financial Officer role is a 40 hours/week, exempt position. The role will require working some weekends and evenings. There will be longer work hours surrounding events. Limited local travel required.
This role is based at our Boston office with in person work required throughout the year and as aligned with B.A.A. hybrid work guidelines.
