Position Description
The Public Health Nurse Practitioner (PHNP) for the Behavioral Health and Wellness Division is responsible for providing comprehensive healthcare services focused on mental health and wellness in various community settings. This role involves performing complex duties within established procedures and protocols, requiring advanced judgment and expertise in prescribing mental health medications. The PHNP will work collaboratively with a diverse population in a fast-paced healthcare environment, ensuring culturally competent care and support.

Typical Duties

  • Acts as a clinician as assigned, obtains health histories, performs physical examinations, collects and interprets laboratory specimens and makes diagnoses. Delegates basic nursing services to nurses, licensed practical nurses, and unlicensed assistive personnel.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, including the prescription of mental health medications in accordance with state regulations.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Monitor patient progress, adjusting treatment plans as necessary to achieve optimal health outcomes.
  • Assess, diagnose, and manage a wide range of mental health conditions in individuals of all ages.
  • Initiates appropriate teaching and demonstration of care for individual clients and families based on nursing assessment with an emphasis on the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health and self-care.
  • Follows up on patients as often as indicated. Refers patients to appropriate resources. Maintains complete and accurate records on each patient seen.
  • Prepare reports on patient outcomes and program effectiveness.
  • Participates in training related to job responsibilities. Provides in-service training to department personnel.
  • Educate individuals and families on mental health issues, wellness strategies, and available community resources.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care.
  • Collaborate with community organizations and stakeholders to enhance mental health services and awareness.
  • Assists in the administration and direction of mental health nursing services. May be assigned to different clinic/work locations as needed.

  • Supports and participates in departmental response to disaster/emergency events and responds and reports to the directives of the Director of Health.
  • Regular, reliable, and predictable attendance; and

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree; Master of Science in Nursing and/or DNP.
  • Experience with diagnosing and treating a variety of Mental Health and Psychiatric disorders including Alcohol and Drug treatment.
  • Three (3) years of experience as a nurse psychiatric nurse practitioner.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Possesses required competencies upon hiring.
  • Current Nurse Practitioner Certification from a nationally recognized nursing accreditation organization.
  • Certificate of Fitness issued by the State of Tennessee.
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the State of Tennessee.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.
  • Vehicle insurance as required by Tennessee Law.
  • Active DEA license required.
  • Valid class "D" driver's license, use of personal vehicle, and maintenance of valid personal
