The Cell Manufacturing Engineering team at Tesla is looking for a highly-motivated Manufacturing Engineer to contribute to the development and ramp of cell manufacturing equipment and processes for our cutting-edge Tesla Energy Batteries. The Battery is one of the most complex and challenging components designed and manufactured at Tesla. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Tesla's world class manufacturing facilities. Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work on a critical subsystem of an incredibly exciting product. In addition to developing working on ramping the line the Manufacturing Engineer works with cross-functional teams to test, validate, and roll-out equipment to production. Responsibilities
  • Own/lead development of new/innovative manufacturing processes from proof of concept through to full scale production that enable improved battery performance and/or cost
  • Lead product design for manufacturability (DFM), DFMEA, Develop and manage PFMEA, DFMEA risk assessments to prioritize process improvement projects and ensure adequate metrology and controls are in place
  • Drive root cause analysis through process and equipment expertise, derive & execute DOE's accordingly, characterize boundary conditions and optimize process for manufacturability and quality
  • Lead design reviews at different design phases to develop specifications and accelerated test plans to validate the product for its determined lifetime
  • Work independently and with vendors to build Proof of principle tooling/fixturing for dev, root cause of failures, propose design or component changes, and implement and validate equipment modifications
  • Drive ramp of new production lines by characterizing baseline performance and capability of each system and drive actions to maintain or improve performance as measured by product quality and tool availability
  • Analyze production with statistical software (JMP or Minitab preferred) to understand manufacturing uptime, availability, and reliability metrics-yield, OEE, cycle time, quality and investigate bottlenecks to identify root cause and countermeasure to maximize throughput
  • Troubleshoot and recover processes by PLC, HMI, or tool management software, and implement changes/improvements
  • Ensure manufacturing lines meet uptime, availability and reliability metrics - OEE, cycle time, quality and first time through
  • Generate and maintain documentation including machine and process specifications, drawings, BOM, spare parts, PFMEA, control plan, process flow chart


Requirements
  • Degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in manufacturing engineering (10+ years of experience preferred)
  • Experience developing manufacturing processes from prototype to mass production
  • Experience with high speed, high volume automated manufacturing equipment (cell assembly, part feeding, packaging, metal forming, inspection systems etc.) a plus
  • Extensive proficiency with 3D (SolidWorks, 3Dx, Catia) and 2D CAD (AutoCAD) platforms
  • A passion to implement and work on ramping a manufacturing line including experience with mechanical automation equipment, design of electromechanical systems, PLCs, motion controls
  • Expertise in Statistical Process Control (SPC), process capability, Data analysis tools ( JMP, Minitab, SQL)
  • Proven ability to operate under pressure while managing multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Significant experience in leading design reviews from ideation to production

      $80,000 - $174,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

      Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
