Position Highlights

An Assistant Research Scientist, Researcher/Scientist IV position is available in the College of Medicine - Phoenix. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to NIH-funded research focused on chronic liver disease, particularly the pulmonary and cardiovascular complications associated with it. The successful candidate will have a strong background in biomedical sciences, with specific expertise in molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, and in vivo rodent models. This is a grant funded position in the Department of Medicine. The position will play a key role in translational research evaluating important clinical complications of cirrhosis and mechanisms of liver fibrosis.

The ideal candidate must possess strong expertise in animal models, molecular biology, single-cell sequencing technologies and cell-based models. The successful candidate should also be able to help write and prepare manuscript to report findings. Additionally, they must have excellent time management skills and the ability to tackle challenging translational research efforts.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform laboratory experiments at a highly independent level under the guidance of the principal investigators.
  • Formulate research methods, and develop or collaborate in the development of new techniques, methods, and equipment.
  • Recommend solutions for research methodology by interpreting principles and analyzing data and complex facts.
  • The experimental procedures include, but are not limited to:
    • qRT-PCR/PCR
    • SDS Page
    • Immunoblotting
    • Histological tissue preparations and imaging
    • Immunocytofluorescence staning and analysis of tissue and cells samples
    • ELISA and multiplex assay
    • Flow-cytometry
    • Cell culture
  • Maintain rodent colonies and perform in vivo experiments utilizing various liver fibrosis rodent models at a highly independent level under the guidance of senior researchers or principal investigators.
  • Review and edit animal protocols to ensure coherence, completeness, and consistency.
  • The procedures include but not limited to:
    • Small animal handling, mouse breeding, and blood and tissue collection.
    • Performing in animal surgeries, injections, intervention studies, and function evaluation procedures.
    • Monitor and care animals during the study periods, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
    • Prepare samples, reagents, and equipment for experiments, ensuring proper calibration and maintenance.
  • Act as a subject matter expert to create, compose, and write articles for peer-reviewed journals, books, or chapter publications.
  • Collaborate with principle investigators to co-author publications and co-present findings at scientific conferences and meetings.
  • Assist in securing research funding by initiating and drafting grant proposals.
  • Coordinate with granting agencies and relevant regulatory bodies as needed to implement and manage regulatory compliance of the research program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge of coordinating experiments, and completing analysis, statistics, and interpretation.
  • Skilled in manuscript writing and preparation for publication.
  • Ability to participate at scientific conferences and present findings.


Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in a related discipline required.
  • Eight (8) years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience


Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience performing the following biological techniques:
  • molecular biology, expression construct design, preparation and use
  • histochemistry
  • qRT-PCR
  • immunoblotting
  • immunocytofluorescence and related microscopy
  • cell culture for testing expression construct function
  • rodent handling, procedures, surgeries
