Job Title: R&D Mechanical Engineer 5 (Lead)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary

This position is responsible for leading R&D Engineers in the research, design, prototyping, and documentation of aircraft cabin interior product development utilizing research and development methodologies in a team environment. This role supports design and development of work scope deliverables to support customer and OEM requirements and provide prototypes and mockups to be used for sales and marketing demonstration, technical proof of concept, and development testing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following with other duties as assigned:
  • Perform design assignments in accordance with established design standards independently.
    • Assigned design tasks include but not limited to commercial aircraft interiors components and products such as premium class seating, product installation, and detailed mechanical systems and assemblies.
  • Participates in teams or leads a team to support the development of designs. Reviews and approved the documentation of design implementation.
  • Obtain, interpret, and analyze OEM airplane product install or layout drawings using approved processes and tools.
  • Provides liaison support for assigned duties to manufacturing and/or in-service issues.
  • Troubleshoots mechanical systems problems.
  • Actively support engineering department goals and initiatives.
  • Coordinate with other departments as necessary.
  • Utilize internal drawing/document standards per customer or regulatory agency requirements.
  • Perform engineering design checks and sign documents, with periodical technical guidance from Supervisor/Functional Manager.
  • Perform engineering design analysis (such as preliminary Stress analysis, Kinematics and Dynamic Analysis), design validation (such as validate analysis models against test data) and task scope (such as work scope validation).
  • Perform engineering design approvals (design/approval authority) and task scheduling (such as detailed schedule of a given task per program requirements).
  • Perform engineering projects scope review, project time estimates and project RFQ commitment along with resources planning and assignments.
  • Act as design authority for design tasks.
  • Define engineer tasks for PE/Functional Manager.
  • Provide mentoring and performance management input to functional Manager.
  • Some domestic or international travel may be required.


Supervisory Responsibilities

This job has some supervisory responsibilities as Lead Engineer and as delegated by the Functional Manager.

Qualifications Requirements

Knowledge and Skills
  • Drafting skills in CATIA V5 and/or Solidworks preferred.
  • Must be able to provide complicated lay-outs and program design studies.
  • Must be able to interact successfully with engineering, supply chain, and manufacturing

departments.
  • Must be able to function as part of a design team.
  • Thorough understanding of manufacturing processes preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of Boeing/Aircraft/SAE Design Standards/Requirements.


Education and/or Experience

BS degree Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related Engineering field (8 years or more of experience) or equivalent working experience (15 years minimum in an aerospace related field).

Language Skill
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such a Federal Aviation Requirements; Airframe OEM and industry requirements regarding Product Design and Installation; operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers of employees of organization.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
