About this job:

The Office of the Controller ensures strong fiscal controls and accurate financial records through the analysis, tracking, and reconciliation of financial data, as well as the preparation of financial reports. This position oversees key functions within the District's financial operations, including year-end close, preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Annual Report and annual audit, Accounts Receivable, Treasury, journal entry processes, State of Colorado special reporting, and Single Audit oversight. Additionally, this role is responsible for identifying and documenting internal controls, developing financial policies, and providing training for diverse audiences.

What You'll Do:
  • Manage the preparation of the District's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and Single Audit, including year-end reporting, audit schedules, and required submissions to regulatory agencies.
  • Oversee year-end and audit planning, assigning tasks, setting deadlines, and ensuring timely completion.
  • Serve as the primary contact for external auditors, coordinating meetings, managing audit requests, and liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead the contracting and onboarding of external auditors, including RFP processes, engagement letters, and budgeting.
  • Ensure compliance with State and Federal financial reporting requirements, including submissions to the Colorado Department of Education and financial transparency reporting.
  • Provide oversight of financial data management, journal entries, and synchronization of internal and external reporting systems.
  • Maintain and enhance the district's financial internal controls, policies, and procedures, ensuring compliance with laws and best practices.
  • Research and implement governmental accounting standards, new pronouncements, and accounting treatments.
  • Oversee data management processes to prevent issues in project accounting, payroll costing, and HR dependencies.
  • Provide leadership for Treasury and Accounts Receivable functions, managing direct reports and ensuring operational effectiveness.


What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting is required.
  • Seven (7) or more years minimum experience in Accounting, CPA firm or Public Sector accounting setting.
  • Five (5) or more years of supervisory experience, leading or managing others.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Experience and education will be considered.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.
  • Strong organizational and analytic skills and strong attention to detail.

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including the ability to lead a high-performing team.

  • Experience with ERP systems, Oracle preferred including General Ledger, Projects, and Capital modules..
  • Experience with Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) preparation or auditing, preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of governmental accounting and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) preferred.
  • Experience in accounting for and reconciliation of capital projects, preferred.
