Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Accounting Manager and Controller, this position is responsible for the preparation of monthly financial statements, general ledger reconciliations, financial analyses, system controls, management reports, tax filings, and assisting with the annual budget and audit processes. Additionally, the role may involve supervising an entry-level accountant, if applicable.
Essential Responsibilities / Duties:
  • Staff Oversight & Training: Provide direct oversight and training to staff accountants performing day-to-day general ledger responsibilities, including journal entries, cash receipts recording, and account reconciliations.
  • Month-End and Year-End Close: Manage the normal month-end and year-end close processes.
    • Prepare various month-end journal entries and reconciliations.
    • Review and post journal entries prepared by hospital departments and uploaded by accounting staff.
  • General Ledger Account Analysis: Perform high-level monthly general ledger account analysis and reconciliation for assigned general ledger accounts (e.g., cash, other accounts receivable, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, accounts payable, accrued expenses).
  • Variance Analysis: Compile variance analysis for assigned AU's/accounts.
  • Policy and Procedure Development: Develop and implement internal and external accounting policies, procedures, and controls under the direction and approval of the Accounting Manager and Controller.
  • Department Collaboration: Work closely with other departments to implement consistent policies and procedures throughout the year, ensuring compliance with GAAP and adherence to accounting controls, especially during year-end.
  • System Maintenance and Upgrades: Collaborate with the Financial Information Systems (FIS) team on changes or upgrades to the accounting system, as well as any necessary system maintenance.
  • Training: Assist in the training of new employees on proper general accounting policies and procedures, and provide ongoing training, including cross-training of staff.
  • Communication and Team Building: Promote open communication, team-building efforts, and collaboration among team members and departments.
  • Accounting Office Oversight: Inform the Accounting Manager regarding areas of exposure within the Accounting office.
  • Ad Hoc Projects: Participate in general routine and ad hoc projects as assigned.

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in Finance or Accounting.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required:
  • As noted above.
Experience:
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting experience. A Master's degree plus two years of directly related experience may be considered for this role.
  • Supervisory experience is preferred, as the role includes directing staff during the monthly and year-end close processes.

  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficient in General Ledger Systems (e.g., G/L Lawson preferred) and Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
    • Ability to train others on software and processes.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical skills with the ability to apply GAAP principles in a non-profit acute care environment.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated ability to guide, direct, and mentor staff.

  • Confidentiality: Ability to maintain strict protocols for confidential or sensitive information.
