Description

The Personal Lines Underwriting Manager Leads and manages a team of underwriters with an assigned territory book of business to achieve planned profit and growth objectives. Responsible for developing strong agency partnerships and ensuring underwriters are making quality underwriting decisions and exceeding customer service expectations while building agency relationships. The leader will participate in executing local and national initiatives. Participates on State Team to analyze and determine impact of product and pricing decisions on the growth and profitability of a state. Responsible for working with and protecting confidential and proprietary customer and Company information.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for managing a team of underwriters who underwrite Personal Lines' products for agents within an assigned territory.
  • Hires and develops underwriters to meet changing business needs. Responsible for fostering team success to achieve profit, growth and retention goals.
  • Provides management to individual underwriters and assigns territories in accordance with the individual's experience, complexity and sophistication of the book of business.
  • May consult with Senior PL Underwriting Manager or Zone Underwriting Manager on more complex management issues.
  • Accountable for financial results including growth, profit, and retention within their state(s).
  • Manages profitability in compliance with Company policies and procedures including but not limited to, large losses, inspections, CAT management, coverage dispute resolution, and leading the Agency Management Process. Guides.
  • Works referrals to make sure decisions are legally compliant. Ensures all service standards are met. Responsible for identifying and participating in key profitability initiatives to improve agent and state/region performance.
  • Reviews loss experience (frequency and severity) for agents, and states within region. Reviews loss ratios and growth for agents when evaluating and making agency exceptions.
  • Partners with Distribution, Claims and Product Management to execute state business plans.
  • Communicates product launches and changes to internal team and external agency partners. Collaborates across the organization to resolve product, process, and customer issues.
  • Develops strong agency relationships within state(s) of accountability.
  • Communicates and educates agents on Safeco's value through frequent conversations, road show presentations, and agency visits.
  • Works with underwriting team to build relationships and key partnerships.
  • Participates on key projects to support execution of department initiatives and Company using demonstrated project management skill s.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and may travel as needed.


Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent work experience, minimum five years of insurance experience required; previous experience in management preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of Personal Lines' products and contract knowledge preferred
  • Demonstrates leadership capabilities required including managing execution and building/fostering relationships
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills
  • Proficient PC skills and capable of working multi-faceted systems
  • CPCU/API designation preferred
