Overview

The Regional Transportation Safety Manager will report to the VP of Transportation Safety and will assist him/her and the Regional Fleet Operational team in developing and implementing NFI's enterprise fleet safety programs. He/she will collaboratively develop and own all activities to manage and improve fleet safety and regulatory compliance. The Manager will day-to-day fleet safety management support and assistance to front-line and regional management. He/she will work closely with the broader Enterprise Risk Management organization with significant collaboration between the Occupational Safety & Health team and the Safety Compliance, Technology and Investigation team. The Manager, Fleet Safety must understand the needs of employees, customers and the community, and will treat all parties with dignity and respect in difficult situations and maintain a positive, service-focused mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the Company's Fleet Safety & Compliance programs through a behavioral based safety mindset. Promote a positive safety culture which recognizes and rewards safe behaviors and safe work practices.
  • Collaborate with operational and functional leadership regarding behavioral safety and organizational policies and practices
  • Manage the successful adherence to FMCSA Safety Management System - Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs). Ensure system data is correct and communicate results and trends to transportation leadership and work collaborative to improve results.
  • Manage the Behavioral Based Fleet Safety Program within the region to drive positive performance and create a culture of safety in support of Company' Purpose, Vision and Values.
  • Manage and promote company and driver CSA performance. Oversee communicate performance reports and collaborate with Fleet Operations to identify drivers requiring additional training and education.
  • Work in partnership with Regional Fleet Safety Managers to provide cross-functional training and development.
  • Manage a diverse team while creating a culture that motivates people who can work in a team-based, matrixed, participative, and results-oriented environment.
  • Perform reviews of applicable motor carrier inspections & violations issued against Company vehicles / drivers to identify root causes and provide solutions for future avoidance.
  • Manage in DOT compliance reviews following preventable roadside inspections to facilitate corrective actions and determine opportunities for improvement within region.
  • Implements action plans as necessary to mitigate risks, including corrective action plans derived from 5-Why root cause analysis.
  • Works with Operations on fleet safety awareness, education and incentive programs.
  • Manages Asset-based (ABT) & Non Asset-based (NABT) Transportation Operations in the compliance with the Department of Transportation (DOT) and other federal, state, and local rules and regulations.
  • Ensures regional fleet safety activities are in compliance with the company's established standards and procedures.
  • Partners with regional Operations leadership to implement vehicle accident and work-related injury prevention plans.
  • Work with regional Operations as needed to identify driver safety and regulatory issues and reinforce driver performance improvement programs.
  • Responsible for the effective management of post-accident drug and alcohol testing programs in region.
  • Provide timely and proper incident response, management and reporting of commercial motor vehicle accidents by working closely with Safety, Operations and Legal teams.
  • Identify and develop of high-potential safety champions within region to promote safety and future safety leadership pipeline.
  • Escalate regulatory issues to the Director, Fleet Safety as appropriate.

  • Internal: Support, consult and work with Corporate, Divisional and Operational Leadership in driving Fleet safety programing. This position will influence and manage the regional rollout of fleet behavioral safety and risk control matters.
  • External: Work with regulators, consultants, lawyers on managing safety behavior and performance.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in leading Transportation-Fleet Safety, at a company whose major business is commercial trucking. Knowledgeable and competent in Behavioral Safety.
  • Bachelor's degree with major coursework in Safety-Transportation Management, Engineering or related field.
  • Demonstrated results in establishing goals and metrics for measuring success.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or related safety designation preferred.
  • Strong Computer application skills including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, GoogleSuite including Gmail.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local fleet and safety regulatory requirements (DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, EPA, etc.).
  • Knowledge and experience with transportation systems and technology including but not limited to: OmniTracs, E-Logs, Lytx Compliance Services (aka RAIR), SmartDrive, TrimbleFleet Mobility (aka - PeopleNet), TMW, Transportation Management Systems (TMS), ADAS systems - Detroit Assurance, Bendix, etc.
  • Strong leadership, collaboration, analytical, influential, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Must be results-oriented with the ability to drive continuous improvement within the Safety organization.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and professionally both verbally, non-verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to travel at varying frequencies and work long, irregular hours as required based on business demand.
