Position Summary

Under general supervision, develops, oversees, and manages strategic planning for research and chemical safety. Developing and implementing laboratory and research safety policies, procedures, and systems. Achieve strategic goals while monitoring and ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and sound safety and health practices.

Ensures compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), and New Mexico Environmental Department (NMED). Performs technical measurements of potential chemical or physical hazards. Research and evaluation of university research safety; conducts related educational and training presentations.

Conditions of Employment
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Specific personnel training is required for employees working with hazardous materials and hazardous waste including HAZWOPER and RCRA training required by 40 CRF Part 262.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 6 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • In depth knowledge of university research laboratories including processes, procedures, culture, and funding models.
  • Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
  • Experience conducting risk assessments and implementing control strategies for novel research.
  • Strong understanding of chemistry, hazardous materials, and lasers.
  • Excellent communication and training skills.
  • Ability to design and implement industrial hygiene programs.
